  • Hard drives...

I need a stand alone hard drive for my TV...I am currently using a Seagate but because it's left on it tends to overheat & I have to turn the power on and off to get it to boot up and handshake with the telly...anyone know of a good replacement.

What are you using it for Puff? I use a couple of 2tb nas boxes to stream to my Apple TV which were cheap in comparison and haven't been a problem at all.

Otherwise I've got a WD 2tb elements drive which I back up my music etc to. That has also been very good and I think they are available for about ?70ish.

In your example I'd be tempted to get some sort of caddy, like the icybox ones, as they have fans... bit noisier, easy usb interface though.

Hi H4rty82....doh! I understood about 2 words of your post...'puter illiterate me!
Where I live the broadband is diabolical so streaming is out of the question (I think). My TV's Panasonic P50G30B have a direct Viera link to any hard drive, it does it automatically when you plug it in. We use it to record films & sport so basically we can edit all the bloody adds out....hope this makes sense...I was hoping to get one that perhaps was powered by the TV connection so would go to standby when the TV did...

No worries, this is an example, basically a box for the hard drive, but it usually includes a fan to keep things cool - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Icy-Box-Ib-3...tp_s2_edpp_url

Wait a sec, you mean its an external drive, in its own case, not just an internal drive?

Things like the icy box example use standard internal computer drives, which imo would be more resilient to continuous use, when in a caddy with a fan anyway. You can get a 1.5tb, maybe even 2tb, for about 70-80 quid... The fans 'can' be a bit noisy tho...

What Seagate drive is it? Depending on if its 2.5 or 3.5 inch will change what case you need. There are also 2 different connections for regular hard drives, SATA and IDE.

Having said that is guess your drive is already in a caddy if its hooked up to the tv already.

I've got a couple of 250 gig laptop hard drives spare that I use in aluminium caddies and they don't get very warm.

Hi guys, thanks for the input...can't find a link but; it's a Seagate external hard drive 500Gb, it has 1 usb lead which plugs into the TV & a transformer power supply. Case dimensions are 210 X 125 X 40...it doesn't have a fan so that may be the problem as it sits very flat & only has convection slots on the bottom...the TV's are Panasonic TX-P50G30B's...over 2 U.
