  • Bolivar gold medal LCDH (2007)

    hey all,
with all the recent discussions and reviews of the bolivar GM! i thought i'd add my own review on this much loved cigar!

i was much fortunate to pick up 2 boxes plus nearly a full box of singles all dating from 2007, the year they came back into regular production, all be it in an exclusive la casa del habanos release! most of us who've had these all have been knocked for 6 by the strength at one point or another! tales of nausea and dizziness have all been told over the last few years by those who have smoked them! i rarely touch them, because of such recollections, but also because i love them and have been trying my best to age my collection (tonights count, i've 26 left)! it's been a while from i've had one, maybe a year or so, so i was interested to see how they're developing!

i'll keep this short and sweet..... 5 years has certainly mellowed them out! gone is the strength, they've now settled into a refined, creamy smoke! flavour ways, they are still typical bolivar, but softer! the one i smoked this evening was less bitter espresso and spice, more cocoa and earthy! the smoke was plentiful and creamy! it's character was very dessert like, think tiramisu! very much a '92-93' rated cigar!

in my experience, i've found that 2007 was very much a magical year for the bolivar blend! aside from the gold medals, any corona jnrs, royal coronas, petite coronas and corona extras i smoked from this year were fantastic cigars, amongst the very best i've experienced! so much so i became a die hard bolivar fan!

i seriously recommend, if possible, look out the GM's from this year (indeed, any bolivar from this year)!! reckon i'll leave it at least 6 months before i have another..... let's see if i can manage that!

    all the best,

    alex

Good review Alex, I must say this is a cigar I really enjoy. Got a couple of boxes from 2008 stashed away and a couple of singles left in the humi.
I would agree about the age thing, certainly I have not had one that has caused any unpleasent side effects.

The only thing I am not sure about, is if this cigar may peek in the next few years or if they could be kept to the 10+ year point and keep improving?

Like Andy this crossed my mind. At the moment my 2007's are very mellow and smooth so will they peak soon? It is by no means a foregone conclusion as often cigars can pick up in strength as the maturation process evolves. Either way I'll take a chance with mine and give them their legs ...but keep dipping in every once in a while

yeah andy, i was thinking the same thing! 5 years has rounded them off, my next real goal would be to try them at 7 years (i think i manage maybe 1 or 2 a year anyway, so i'm still gonna have them around that mark), then 10 years! sure isn't this all part of the fun and experience? lol

as for the unpleasent side effects, most of us experience that when they were about a year old, lol! same with the boli 2009EL, man it really did kick your ass, lol! the guys at friends of habanos sing their praises now, guess 3 years has helped them settle down!

yeah monkey, as i was saying, i found the GM i had tonight to be very mellow, smooth and creamy...... a very tasty cigar indeed! if this was to be a taste of what they are developing into, then, i'm a very happy man indeed! sure, we'll see in another year or two......

Yes Alex, I think some cigars smoke well young but other need a few years on them to knock of the rough edges. I will probably smoke 4 Gm's per year so this should take me to the 8/9 year point. I dont think I have the self control to only sample one every 6 months

Fair to say all long way off what one would imagine for a traditional Boli. Nothing like the old-school power-houses. Not that I am complaining

Seems you've a goodly few boxes then Andy.

For those that haven't I would urge a 'get your skates on' .... might not be too many on the shelves soon!

How apt, catching this thread as I smoked an '07 on Sunday. Great flavours, with a refined strength. Me an the Magical Mod were talking about them at the time: the wonderous one heard word that the '08s may have been considered a superior blend. Unfortunately, I can't make a comparison, but the few I've left are sure winners in my book.
