im probably making a fool of myself but why change the habit of a lifetime, I have been coming to this forum for a month or so now and I am enjoying it a lot, I just cant get my head around all the abbreviations (I have a teenage son and can read his texts so not a complete novice!) I found a online quiz thing here http://www.sporcle.com/games/g/chatacronyms but still cant find out what one I keep seeing here means and its "herf" I have even googled it and all it comes up with is something about Russia and shock pulse generators! whats it all about?
I have to say I have been told off more than once for my lack of full stops and capital letters maybe I should do an English grammar course or start a new online course in "chigat" the unique language used in cigar chat rooms (sorry forum)

Funnily enough, i'm new to this site only joined a few days ago and am struggling to understand all the addreviations too tho 'herfing' I did know ( tho I think it has other meanings too for other things. I think it only time and practice will make us better, tho I hope this isn't a site that talk in code for us newbies. By the way BOTL is brothers of the leaf. In general I find things a bit confusing tho I hope practice -as ever -may make it better, or clearer. I'm sure there is lots of good info here. For me, it's a question of managing to get hold of it. Good luck. Colin

Hi...what others are you struggling with? Herf and BOTL are the main ones, though herf isn't an abbreviation, just a term!

I always disliked this term. It makes no sense!

Anyone know it's origins (no rumors, por favor)?

          I borrowed this from Bing:

"No one knows exactly how herf originated, however the basic definition of a herf is simply a fancy term for ?cigar party? or a way of saying ?let?s get together and smoke cigars? or ?let?s herf?. If you spend any time on a cigar forum or even in a cigar lounge, you?re bound to hear the term herf thrown around. Some might say, ?what cigar are you herfing??

I agree - this term gets on my wick. "we are meeting up for a smoke", "lets have a smoke", "smoke?". They all work for me. The one that bugs me the most is a certain retailer in the UK constantly talks about "herfing" a cigar. This just sounds fucking ridiculous to me. "Herfing a D4 tonight". NO YOU'RE NOT - YOU'RE SMOKING A D4.

I just said to the mrs the term "herfing" and she says it sounds like someone throwing up! it takes as long to say herf as it does to say smoke!

I have read that 'herf' is a derivitive of 'huff' which is/was a term used for smoking drugs. I think it is an Americanism.

Yet more reason to stop using the word?

Herf is the noise the cigar makes when you draw on it.
