  • 9mm pipe

I have just ordered my new pipe this is it http://www.thebackyshop.co.uk/produc...r-smoking-pipe its my first try with a filtered pipe (my falcon pipe is filtered in a way with the dry ring but you know what I mean) I ordered a box of balsa wood filters as they apparently don't restrict the draw like the normal 9mm round filters. I just wondered if anyone has any experience with filtered pipes or do you think ill end up taking the filter out!

Hope you don't mind a strong personal opinion on this one. Filters in pipes are a gimmick and detract from true smoking. I am a 'wet' smoker myself and simply accept that I must clean my pipe more regularly than a 'dry' smoker. With pipe tobacco, there should be nothing to 'filter' out. I buy my tobacco for the flavour it gives me and placing a filter between tobacco and mouthpiece distorts that taste. Also (hope you don't mind this also) aluminium is not a medium for pipe smoking and Falcons/Alcos, although popular in their day, have never been for serious pipe smokers. The bruyere and a good mouthpiece are the perfect combination for a satisfying smoke. Choose the right pipe (even a second-hand 'estate' one) and the right tobacco and your pipe smoking will be total satisfaction. I don't criticise those who smoke to a different specification than me but I do believe they are missing an 'ultimate' experience. Happy smoking.

See if you can get a bypass tube for the filter cavity too. They are cheap, and you may regret not getting one. I've heard that balsa filters are the only ones worth considering.

I don't mind your opinion at all and you may be right, I might not be as lucky finding the right pipe as I have been in finding the right tobacco

At peak, I had upwards of 120 active pipes. In time, I rationalised and currently have 23. Of those, there will be 5 or 6 true favourites. My point is that I decided (over the years) to try many and reduce to few - then fewer. I rarely bought new pipes and chose good quality second hand 'estate' pipes - Dunhill, Charatan, James Upshall and Ashton. I also had less expensive pipes - Barling, Bewlay, Peterson and the like. Trying many gave me a chance to find that pipe (or those few pipes) with which I am totally happy. I suppose, having smoked a pipe for 53 years now, the pipes I now smoke are well tried and tested.

I do look out for old pipes on eBay but as yet not had much luck, I have a big kilner jar I keep all my pipes in mostly cheap rubbish and corn cobs, I have said before I hate my falcon with a passion and at the moment im smoking a old dr plumb lightweight its ok but I just look stupid smoking it as I have a huge noggin! I went for the aldo for its wide fishtail mouthpiece and due to being on crutches in the house I carry it around in my mouth when going to the door for a smoke so it should be a comfortable fit. I did consider a Peterson system pipe but it seemed very fiddly to clean and my hands are clumsy at the best of times! I have asked my tobacconist to let me know when he gets any Dunhill "seconds" so fingers crossed I might get one this next year (he gets them from time to time) and I always keep my eye on eBay for a bargain. and when camping season comes around again ill be car booting again looking for anything to do with pipes or cigars!
Can I ask what does it mean when they say "estate" pipe? I see it so often but im unsure what it means (sorry to show my ignorance but if I never ask I will never learn)

The term 'estate' is a slightly snobbish way of saying 'second-hand'. It's a bit like these fancy car dealers who describe used cars as 'pre-owned'. Pretentious rubbish ! If I come across something to recommend, I will PM you. Happy smoking.

I have had my pipe now for a week and out of all the filters I bought the balsa stands head and shoulders above the rest! the other filters you knew they were there, they tightened the draw and took most of the flavour from my tobacco, with the balsa it was nice as If I hadn't put it in myself I would not of known it was there! and I got the full flavour of my tobacco, so in short im going to stick with the balsa ones! also I really like the pipe it had a good weight but not too heavy, its half bent shape also made it easier to carry around in my mouth and the wide fishtail mouthpiece means a seamless comfortable fit.
