I received this smoke as part of a Christmas gift from Simon Bolivar. Si was a little uncertain of the exact but knew it was from the ?Flower power? era, which was pretty born out by the Mellow Yellow staining to the cello from years of secreted oils.
Appearance: Machine made and a little under PC size, the Aromaticos can only be described as rustic being gnarled and heavily veined with a slightly drab earth brown wrapper. The Standard ?B? band was slightly faded and the metallic gold had begun to oxidise causing the band to appear fused into the cigar.
Construction: The cigar felt good in the hand, and being a ?mecanizado? I expected it to be evenly packed along its length. The pre-draw was loose and the smoking draw the same. The burn was unpredicable, being occasionally OK but for the most time going here, there and everywhere. The ash whilst it looked flakey was reasonably compact and good for the course. One re-light. Several corrections required.
Flavour: The cigar started well with a nice tobacco/woody ?pear-drops? flavour before settleing into light dry tobacco with a pleasant bitter sweetness that was fruitlike and faintly citric. Towards the end of the third the fruit taste acquired a light jamlike quality (think Victoria sponge) and I could also pick out wood notes which reminded me of tea chests. The second third was predominantly light sweet tobacco and the final third followed as a dryer deeper version. However what was good, was the taste in the final third although quite dry was not unrefreshing, and the aftertaste ? which is still lingering on ? was pleasantly surprising.
Overall: Not a bad smoke at all, a bit same tasteing in the last two thirds but where a bigger cigar would have become boring the Coronitas was put-up-withable. To be honest I wasn?t really expecting much from a (min) 30 year old cigar, but giving Si his due, he?d obviously stored this well and it made for a very pleasant interlude on bitterly cold but bright Winter morning. These are obtainable, I?m not suggesting anyone buy a box, the nicotine power (if there ever was any) is long gone, but as a novelty split they might be interesting.
