  • Cohiba Siglo III - First ACTUAL review.

Siglo III. Got it last December, so it's only half a year old........
It was decently bright and just regular non-rainy weather. Nothing to drink at all. Smoked alongside a mate and Use Your Illusion II (Guns N' Roses) playing in the background.

    First look:
Pretty awesome, however, I can see exactly where the wrapper starts/ends. Almost never get these with the other cigars (or maybe only noticed this cause I wanted to document it, so i looked closer). However, the foot looks reasonable not stem-ish. Good tobacco. Odour still retains, smells like most my other cohibas actually. Doesn't seem to have too much of a difference........
Longer than the standard Siglo II/ Juliet II/ Monte 4s. These things are actually coronas
A very meh cut, did get nice draws off it, but it is still very meh:

Lit the thing with the splint FROM the tube. It was a tubed III.. Shouldn't make a difference, no?

    First Third:
    IMG-20130508-00512.jpg
Not bad. Good draws like I mentioned with them. Some people might chew me out on the "not bad" understatement. But that was exactly what it was: not bad.
Most people applaud how it's silky and smooth or whatever synonyms you can think of as well. Only every third draw reflected evidence of that. Otherwise, they weren't as noticeable...... Sad

    Second Third:
    IMG-20130508-00513.jpg
Pretend the ash in the background is still attached
Got much stronger (or maybe it's just more intense) now. Chocolate silky smoothness is still being smoked in absentia. To my dismay...... Has notes of nuts and various scents of nature.. like trees or sap trees. It also has aromas of almonds (maybe there's cyanide!)
The more intense/ stronger smoke is quite welcomed. I enjoy its presence as well as the fact that it's not scorching the top of my palate yet. Unlike how the.....

    Third Third:
    IMG-20130508-00515.jpg
..did. Annoying this thing was to keep lit. Relight count was 3 at the end of the cigar.
Got harsh and strong draws. However, it's not as harsh as say.. a RYJ #2 draw at the end. It still was palatable. But the bloody annoying thing burnt my palate. Still feeling it right now.......
Good for now. I enjoyed the last third more than I should've as it was getting harsh even with a 10 second cooldown time between draws....... Flavours remained unchanged except maybe the almond's gone.

    End thoughts:
Disappointment overall. HOWEVER, for $9.00, it was an enjoyable cigar. The prices here in Toronto are around 40 dollars a stick...... It also has the novelty of changing the colour of the cap to adjust to how long you've been smoking it.
    Rating not counting price? B
    Rating counting the price? C-

If this is your normal smoking speed you should stick to $2 NC's..your smoking way too fast IMHO.

          Hahaha, good god no.
This was at a cuban aeroport in december. Got a box of 3 for around 23 pesos which works to 26 dollars. So around 9

See, i havent known that. When it comes to thin (or even moderate) ring gauges, i cant get them to stay lit near the third third......
Thats the reason I'm now prone to 10, 20 second draws near the end. (Might also be because it tends to be windy when i smoke......)
It was annoying to keep it to 30 second draws cause it kept going out...... With that much cool time..

what humidity do you keep your smokes? The reason i ask is if your needing to draw that fast chances are you store to wet. Try dry boxing or dropping your RH to closer to 60%

Cubans i keep at 65% and dominicans slightly above 72%. I assume it's good that way.... Therefore, i think it should just be the wind then.....
But I'll season my 15ct humi and try it at 60. I always thought 60 was a tad low......
I do open the box of cubans a tad too often. Should keep a small separate "to smoke" humidor.

65% shouldn't be ok, Have you calibrated your hygrometers? also if there analogue then bin them and get digital as the error margin on analogue is horrendous(with the exception of one make that I know of).

I thought 65 used to be a tad low already. So you're saying that even 65 is high?? Hmmmmm, I'll see what i can do then.
And yupp however, I've four desk humidors (50cigar count total) so I've never needed a digital hygro. The price per humidor would go up immensely! Plus i just got two new analogues, haha.
I find a 2% deviation isnt too bad anyways.........

I store all my cuban at 60% and my NC at 65% but it's mostly personal preference.

There is something not right of your having that much trouble keeping stuff light, I would invest in one digital that you can check your analogues against also look into something like heartfelt beads which are the best for maintaining the correct humidity.

65 is not too high at all. I'm assuming Sligub meant "should be okay". Perhaps there is an issue with your hygrometers, but they'd have to be out by a good 10-15% for it to be so humid that the sticks are going out that quickly. Have you calibrated them all? Possibly a wind issue as you've eluded to, but needing to draw every 10-20 seconds to avoid the cigar going out is certainly something I've not experienced...even in windy weather! Perhaps you're underestimating the time you're taking between smoking!

Sorry must have autocorected I ment should be okay, I don't think it's a wind issue. I live in Orkney and smoke in some serious wind without an issue like this, poor burn line yes but not going out.

Yeah wind shouldn't really be an issue. Heartfelt beads are a good suggestion. Butternut...I'd also recommend getting a digital hygrometer too. You can use just one to check all your humis, and to crosscheck your analogue hygrometers too.

To your other comment, with the typo: Great! so 65 is good then. I've had them at 60 before for a week and was freaking out about it, maybe i'll remove the puck again....

I guess i could move the digital around every week or so. I'll try to do that then
Also, instead of beads and shite, i make my own PG solution. so i can adjust it from 60-40 pg-water, 50-50, or 45-55 pg-water depending on the RH level i want.
i use the 60-40 on my cubans and they seem to be doing ravishingly

hmmm, maybe then. i could very well be underestimating the time.
I just do know that when it's down to the last picture, i DO have to try to maintain it below 20 seconds so i don't have them going out .
The first half of the last third i don't need to focus much, so it might just be my judgement
