    hey all,
it's been a while from i posted my thoughts here on a cigar that's genuinely impressed me!! sorry, i'll make myself clear....... i haven't had a bad cigar for a long, long time!! every so often, you come across one that blows your socks off!! for me, this was last night's h upmann magnum 50!!

as i mentioned, my intentions were to have a cohiba siglo IV i've had in the humi sincet xmas and/ or a partagas lusitania (from a 10 box i bought 2 years ago)!! anyway, when i went to the tupperdor to fetch the lusitania, i noticed something unusual, a wooden 10 ct SLB!! hoi hoi? what's this i thought? holy f**king cow, an unopened box of 10 h upmann magnum 50s!! you know things are bad when you can't even remember buying a box of cigars! lol!! checking the bottom of the box, i nearly fell back on my ass....... they were stamped 'URO JUL 08'!! when i opened the box, the aroma was AMAZING: chocolate, barnyard, creamy!! the cigars themselves were lightly dusted in bloom and had an almost maduro look to them!! oh, yes, i knew this was gonna be good.......

the cigar i selected looked stunning!! flawless construction, perfect cap, perfectly yielding with no hard spots!! rather than cut it, i opted to punch it!! the draw was a bit 'open' so i was glad i didn't cut the cap!! the cold draw hinted at what's to come, dusty chocloate, cream, light spice!! i really took my time to torch the foot right...... and i left it for a few minutes whilst i went and prepared some coffee (taylors java jampit, perfect)!! the first draw was beautiful....... creamy, just creamy!! before i turn this experience into james joyce's 'Ulysses', i'll give a quick run down of the experience:
1st third: creamy, nutty, milk chocloate, light spice (think nutmeg, cinnamon), hint of sweetness..... paired well with the coffee!

2nd third: the above, with the introduction of orange (think seville marmalade), caramel and butterscotch!! for this i got a glass of highland park 12 and cracked open a bottle of newcastle brown ale!!

final third: all the above, only it got more sweet and spicy...... with hint of peat (though that could be the whisky influence)!!

as you can guess, i nubbed this, singing my fingers!! i was so impressed at how solid and compact the ash was (which was blue/ grey) and how perfect it burned...... you would've thought i drew around the 'magnum 50' band with a felt tip pen it was that good!! anyway, it lasted a good 1.5hrs with no touch ups and no relights!! bliss!! easy a 92+ for me, and perhaps my cigar of the year (i can't see anything else beating this experience)!!

final thoughts: usually my cigars just about see the 3 year mark (i don't usually smoke anything with less than a year on it)!! with this experience, i can see the benefits of aging cigars!! it's gonna be hard keeping away from the rest of them.....

    all the best,

    alex

    Awesome review!

    Salivating after reading that.

I've yet to try any of the Mag's, but I think I will be ordering a few soon!

Great review! Like I said, I'm a big fan of the Mag 50s. Hope my cab turns out to be as good as yours in a years time. I'm just hoping I can keep my hands off until then! :-)

            Yupp defines the writing nicely.
The elegant English makes this amazing experience reliveable by everyone here! Especially how we'll have to wait for 200 quid and 3 years to live the same experience
            Stunning review Alex

Many thanks for the review Alex. You might have hit a good box. I have not had a good one for years.

All the post 2005 (EL) ones i have smoked are big, friendly and a bit bland. Not much to call them Upmann and not much to maintain interest.

Enjoy that box, you may have a gem

I agree with Monks. I've bought two of the 10 boxes from 09 and all have been a wee bit meh....

I love the Upmann flavour in general but the 50 is always a disappointment

You're a lucky bugger if you've found some germs...

Oh, and great review mate...keep them coming

cheers monk!! however, i think you may be a wee bit harsh on them if you're comparing them to the 2005EL, which by all accounts is a gem!! i've only ever bought 2 10ct boxes, both i think from 2008!! 1 is long gone, the other the one i've just found!! it's been undisturbed for possibly 3 years....... and during that time it's been fed boveda packs!! i'll leave it 6 months before i try another (it's a definite christmas day cigar)!! saying that though, i do agree with the big and friendly description........ bland this definitely wasn't!! lol

cheers stevie....... like i said, i haven't felt the need to do a review for a while!! this cigar really hit the spot, and thus i felt the need to share the experience!! pity your magnum 50's aren't up to standard....... mind you, they're only a year behind mine!! maybe you should expect them to be good in about a year or so.......

funny, in the same tupperdor, i found 3 more singles of the 2008 cuaba piramides EL!! that is a great cigar........ last one i had was halloween about 3 years ago and it was just magic!! funny, upon release a lot of people idmissed them, now they've turned into something fantastic (though not quite the monte sublime from the same year...... coincidence?)!!

Makes me chuckle that you lot actually forget about cigars you have, must have some serious collections.
