  • Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2

Had one of these last night after dinner as Boisdale Canary Wharf, paired it with a light Speyside. It was bought as a single so I've assumed that there is no age on it.

    First Third:
Light on the nose before lighting, smells mainly of cedar wood, not a very spicy nose. On lighting the ash is a very light grey and the initial burn is excellently even. Once lit the draw is excellent, and the flavour is quite light but very pleasant. There are occasional floral notes, sometimes creamy notes too.

    Second Third:
Burn and draw remain excellent. Flavour remains largely the same but there are now occasional notes of grass and toasted oats, the latter being only infrequent and subtle notes. Incredible billows of smoke in this third, very satisfying.

    Last Third:
Burn is now slightly less even but is easily correctable. Draw and flavour remain very good, albeit the notes of various flavours decrease in frequency. The burn does not become too harsh until the nub.

Overall, a highly pleasant and very light cigar which pairs well with speyside whiskey. Probably my palate which is the problem, but many of the flavour notes were so light and fleeting that it was very difficult to identify what they were.

yep, this is how i remember my first experience with an HDM epi2! light, inoffensive, bland....... boring!! then i discovered partagas d4's and bolivar royal coronas and thought 'now that's what a cuban cigar should be like!'

great, honest write up mate! keep 'em coming!

Yeah, it was a lovely light cigar but because the various notes were so fleeting, once I'd finished it I did wonder whether it was in danger of being a bit boring. Think I might have to smoke a few more just to be sure though.......

Good review of one of my favourite light/med smokes. I enjoy the easy nature of the ep2.

Yes they are lighter than your average Havana but I find plenty of occasions to enjoy a lighter smoke. Wouldn't pair it with a spirit though, coffee & a Belgian blonde works best for me & doesn't overwhelm the Hoyo flav's. Examples with Duvel, Karmeliet, Stella & Jupiler.

Tried one of these for the fist time this morning (I am a fan of the especials). Struck me as a 'lighter especial' flavour wise - cedar was showing through most of the time. Would certainly try again because I can't tell off one - the first inch was 'wow' on flavour and then the second inch was fairly flat before settling down to a cedary smoke with occasional HdM flavour.

Yeah this sounds about right! I find them a bit too light, but the one I had today was full of flavour - weird!

Thanks for the tip monkeyman, now would be a good time to buy & box & lay it down as I 'll be starting my last one shortly.

Yeah I've had a few more since doing this review and weirdly they've all been fuller flavoured than the first one I had. I'm just about to order a box of 25 so fingers crossed they'll be on the lighter side!
