  • Another New Pipe

My third pipe. Vauen Sir 479.
Just finishing a bowl of SG FVF which I packed and half smoked last night. Trying the delayed gratification technique - highly recommended in Virginia baccy for fuller and sweeter taste.

Delayed Gratification technique? Sounds like something a dodgy celebrity may be found dead in a closet as a result of..... What is it exactly?

Yes, it is a very stupid sounding term to describe something relating to pipe smoking, and it does sound like some dodgy activity you might read about in the tabloids - if you should happen to find yourself reading such rubbish instead of wiping the dog dirt from your shoes with it.
Anyway, I digress... DGT is the term used to describe the intentional part-smoking of a bowl of tobacco before setting the pipe aside for a few hours, even up to 24 hours.
The part-smoking activates chemicals and sugars in the tobacco, which intensify the taste and flavours during the setting aside, very much like adding a little water to a good whisky, or part cooking a casserole and cooking through the next day.
Apparently, DGT suits only Virginia tobaccos; blends containing Latakia, Burley, heavy doses of Perique etc. result in an unpleasant smoke, very much like returning to a cigar a day later.
I tried the dodgy sounding practice with Sam Gawith Full Virginia Flake and finished off a very rich, full flavoured, sweet smoke, with no harshness, no bitterness, and no 'bad day-after' taste.
I think I might make DGT a regular to my pipe smoking.
Hope this sets aside the unsavoury image you might have in your mind of some celebrity found in less than ideal circumstances in a hotel room.

Top info! I had never heard of this until now but will certainly give it a go.

DGT is my favoured way to smoke virginias....especially McCraines Red Ribbon 1983 crop. I like to char the tobacco at first light, then a second light to smoke until in naturally goes out...usually five mintues for me. Then I set the bowl aside and finish it the next day. Been doing it this way for ten years, and it works for me every time. Better, sweeter smoke. I don't find any ill flavours in blends with perique, though. For my tastes, DGT with perique blends works just as well. Latakia doesn't work at all...it fact I think it detracts as opposed to enhance the flavours. I find this technique works well for Rattrays Brown Clunee, Marlin Flake and Old Gowrie, or McCelland virgina blends...or Samuel Gawith virginas. Good post!

Yes, I visit the tobacco reviews site often. It's amazing how many tobaccos are out ther,e which is testimony to the antiquity of smoking tobacco.
