  • Swimming with phone & camera

So this morning I was out early for my only fishing trip of this leave, was wearing thigh waders & standing in water about 3' deep. Tried casting abit to my left & to avoid a bush I just stepped out a bit furhter. I have found a few swims were the water slopes quick steeply & is slippery so I am weary but this was a complete drop off, & drop off I did! I dropped my rod & noted the water had come above my waist & therefore everything was all ready wet (would have been OK in chesties) so rather than just get out I surged fwd grabbed the rod handle just as it was slowly sinking, cork handle uppermost.

Then got back onto the ledge & clambered out. There was no flow/current & I wasn't in any more danger than a dunking, nor at 13oc hypothermia but of course on my belt was my phone & camera.

I have dried both & removed batteries & cards. Have gently dried with hair just warm dryer, now planning to put them in a plastic bag with some rice to try & abosrob any remaining moisture; unless another has a better idea?

PS, no of course I didn't catch anyting & the spare set of clothes that I have carried in my car for yrs, was taken out last weekend for the Bournemouth trip & not put back. Ended up going home just in my waterproof salopetes.

I think as long as you don't try turning either on before you are sure they have dried out you should be fine. I did the rice thing with a camera last year after dropping it in the snow and all was fine after a couple of days.

What a bugger. Apart from the rice have you got any desiccant packs kicking around? They might help?

More importantly (guessing here), no cigars were sacrificed.

Just kidding Simon, hope that phone and camera recover. Once dropped an old Sony phone in the water whilst on a friends boat, somehow survived despite the sea water. Left it somewhere warm and dry for a few days and it worked, then later that day, dropped it in a glass of red, and that was the end of it :-(

OK, just took my camera & phone out of the plastic bag. The phone is working fine, slight stiffness on sliding it open to use but apart from that I am hopeful it will survive. The camera also came on & the lens comes out. I can see old photos on the SD card but I can't see anything through the lens beside a light blur. It takes a photo (even the flash works) but it's just the blur thats captured.
Any ideas on what might be wrong & whether this might be worth reparing or just replace?

Sounds like there's condensation On the inside of the lens, or worst case the CCD chip Is dead. Some cameras are easy and cheap to change CCD. Just look up your camera model followed by CCD chip on eBay to see if it's worth doing cost wise.

Have you got the rescue bag I sent you yet, stick it in there for a week it will take all the moisture out as long as no components have been damaged it will work fine again.
