  • You really got me going...

I've been reading many pipe-esque threads over the last few weeks and I must say you've all got me very interested. So much, that last week, I popped down to my local tobacconists to price up a corn cob, required accessories and tobacco. I walked out with a corn cob, tamper tool, cleaners and two blends!

Well, I had a few bowls this week, with increasing success in terms of packing, lighting and actually smoking the bugger, but felt unfulfilled by the tobacco. It was a little like smoking erm, not much! Im a full time cigarette smoker in addition to cigars. I've been noting comments on the 'what are you smoking' thread and checking out reviews of various tobaccos on the net. I've been very curious about full flavoured and vitamin N inclined varieties.

Anyhow, take a step back in time to three weeks ago, where I discovered two vintage pipes in a shop window. See where this is going ay? This morning I picked them up and here they are: a couple of unused and boxed Sasieni One Dots

So on the way home, I grabbed a tin of Irish Flake. Whilst having read around enough to know what I might have been getting, I was surprised by the 'slab-ness' of the tobacco, being about 1.5mm thick. I have rubbed some out and plan to have a pop later.

Well you buggers, it's all your fault, leading me down this terrible path of evil imbibing, bwwaahhaaah

    Thanks

Welcome on board..... Sounds like you need some Gawith Hoggarth Black Bogie in your life! Dunhill Nightcap could be another good call...... Mmmmm Nightcap there's a thought, may just have a bowl later!

Edit: P.S absolutely stunning choice of pipes... I bet that strait Bulldog is a beauty to hold.

Cheers Marc. The choice was admittedly limited to what we see, though the Bulldog would have picked even if there had been a dozen I'd coveted them since seeing them. Yes, it's a dream in the hand mate

I've read about the nightcap and may delve in next month. As for black bogies, I'm all up for having a pick at them if I can source it. I'll check the net, as whilst my tobacconist has a pretty arge selection, there aren't many of the more, boutique isn't the word and I expect neither is obscure, tobaccos but you'll know what I mean.

Well, I honestly think that mysmokingshop is hard to beat for pipe tobacco. If its available in the UK, Simons most likely got it in stock at a competitive price.
But saying that you may be surprised how many places stock the Gawith Hoggarth range, there's even a barber shop in Thornton Cleveleys that stocks them!
They seem to have the retail sector wrapped up as far as tobacco availability goes outside of supermarkets.

I just wish a couple of the American brands that get raved about were available here e.g McClelland and G.L. Pease.

The recent talk of pipe smoking has had me thinking of giving it a bash, but my Mrs would take the piss so much and probably make me sell a kidney finance it and my cigar wish list.

Apparently the bottom one is pre WWII, some age on it then

All Sasieni One, Four, and Eight Dot pipes made before W.W.II carried a patent number on the shank, with 150221/20 stamped on pipes destined for the European Market
i was bored, the Mrs had xfactor on

The big selling point is that in comparison to cigar smoking, the pipe can be a positively thrifty sport. I also bet some of your better halves would be surprised at how much they will enjoy the smell of some of the tobaccos, especially the aromatics.

But yeah, your gonna get called an old fart for a week or two.

I think the ones with the spot on the side as opposed to the top are pretty damned rare thus highly sought

Yes apparently so, however from a using/smoking point of view (in my humble opinion how these items should be seen and cherished!)....... These are as close to as good as it gets as most of us will see in a lifetime, so enjoy them and allow them to fulfil their potential as GREAT smoking pipes!

Reading around, as I did before purchasing, I understand they were manufactured from circa 1920 until the mid 20s. Nice pieces of history

The bulldog will definitely get some use, as I love the design and profile but I'm undecided about the rustic. I may consider auctioning it, so that it gets some love in the way it was made for.

More that just a nice piece of history mate, quite easily up there with the best pipes ever made!

When you make your mind up, drop me a PM of a ballpark of what you would be looking at getting for it. I would certainly be interested, however wether I would have the reddies to procure such a piece is another story.
If you ever sell the bulldog though, I'm you man! I would sell a kidney for that. LMAO

I thought I was onto something and its nice to hear they're held in good respect. Re the kidneys Marc, if you've got a decent lower back, I'd snap your hand off, mines shagged
