  • Possible idea for a bit of fun?

Not sure if this exists, if it ever did do and it was stopped or if the idea is a load of garbage to begin with, but...

Simon's Competition thread, in conjunction with a video I have just watched on youtube sparked an idea about a sweepstake/raffle/lottery/whatever you want to call it.

Maybe once a month, or shorter or longer time intervals, forum members put in a tenner for example, and then a name is drawn out of a hat and the winner receives some cigars from the proceeds?

Maybe it would require a target each draw for it to reach a level of participation commensurate with collecting enough entrants/total raised funds, and how that would affect the running time/frequency I don't know, but the idea may have legs?

I am not suggesting I run it, I would imagine a long and good standing member/forum mod/owner/etc if anyone had the time and inclination. I realise it would involve some leg work for those who took it on so I don't really know how practical it all sounds or even what others think, but it seems like a bit of fun to me with the chance every now and again to get some cheap cigars (cost of entry to the raffle)

Obviously the details would have to be ironed out, but as a general idea...

    What do you guys think?

    Second thought.

Or cigarobsession.com does a cigar lottery. You send him three cigars for one entry into the raffle and when the total reaches 150 the raffle is drawn.
Could do roughly the same, maybe 2 cigars sent to the organiser plus 50p to cover postage when the total reaches an amount, depending on interest start at a smaller amount 30/50, raffle is drawn and the winner gets all the smokes.
Id have the time and the inclination but obviously not the trust.

Just another idea, I'd play .....

I wouldn't want anything to detract from Simon's fundraising and would prefer a decent % of any ????? raffle to go toward that.

I think that sounds like a good idea - with the money we pay whoever organises it could buy a box of something (assuming that many people are interested!) as the prizes, and if there is any money left over that could either roll over or go to a charitable cause

The only concern I would have is would Simon have raised as much money for a very good cause if it was a more regular thing? Also how many people would actually regularly take part - would it actually be worth the effort of organising if only ?50 (for instance) is raised each month?

I agree that raising an amount to buy something could become difficult.

Ah I didn't realise Simon's charitable events were a frequent thing, well obviously wouldn't want to detract from that in any way. The way I was looking at it, is that i used to play the actual lottery, but since the tickets have gone up and I have won like ?40 in a decade, I have cancelled that now, but would rather put that money towards something more relevant to my new interest and have a bit of a craic in the process. That's ?16 thrown away on lottery tickets each month that could be diverted... I am sure a few more people probably feel the same way lol

Monthly was just a get it out there suggestion, even just once a year or every 6 months etc...no idea how it would pan out, but yer, I'd be interested to hear what the custodians of the community feel/think about the idea (mods, admin, long standing members etc), definitely don't want to ruin or affect the atmosphere or harm any long standing money raising efforts people already organise.
