  • Time between puffs

Many revered cigar aficionado advise about smoking style and taking puffs or sips at the rate of one a minute, or thereabouts. We know why, but does anyone religiously stick to this?

I know, as a predominantly solitary smoker, I generally don't manage that rate.

How long do you go between taking puffs?

I must admit if on my own I tend to puff at about a minute or so,probably faster when your minds drifting, if at work I puff as much as I can to get slightly light headed, makes the shift go better, and if smoking alongside my cousin then its when I can get my bloody cigar off him.

I find I manage about 45 seconds if I'm in the car, but I have tried watching the clock and puffing on the turn of the minute to see if it made a difference.

Leaving longer than a minute does seems to improve the flavour as the stick gets time to cool between puffs. I'm coming round to the way of thinking that leaving a while and taking a long, very slow draw gives me an improved experience. It seems more relaxing to me to enjoy it leisurely rather than attack it like a cigarette.

Do you mean you smoke slower or faster than this?

I think the more the stick kicks me, the more I let it rest. Particularly towards the last third.

Like mothman, I also go at it quite hard at the start to get the light-headed thing.

It is bloody hard to lay off a good cigar for a long time, I find. I just like it too much!

I'm giving our sax player a good Havana for his 40th birthday. He's a cigarette monster par excellence, so I'm also giving him strict toke-counselling!

For me, depends what I'm doing with it. If I'm relaxing on my own or with friends in the garden maybe over a minute. If I'm chomping on a fat one while mowing the lawns I'll puff away like ivor the engine

I find it also depends a bit on the draw, if it's a tight draw I'm down to 35/40 seconds if the draws perfect it's ok for 45/50, much longer then I have to take a double or a long large slow one as the volume of smoke is reduced as the burn is diminished, also I vary it a bit if it's heating up a little then longer etc. once you balance out smoke volume and temp it kinda decides for you... if you know what i mean.

Is that Madonna in your avatar?
She smoked huge ones for an album at the beginning of the 90s, I think, and I find those pictures of her working a cigar pretty hot!

I'm guessing faster than that rate Dave, although I'm going to test myself out soon. The prompt for this was reading through Boss's almost two hour stint with his RP Fire (in his review). Unfortunately, I read it mid stick (same cigar) so I was unable to clock how long it took me, but I'm reckoning an hour tops.

Hope your feeling a little better, I've put a high res one in my album, so you can see it better,

                      Round The Horn later, Sir...

                      On puffing.

I really love it in the final stages when a stick might be getting sleepy when I decide to give it three or four strident tokes to wake it up - without making a hot stick - and the thick cloud of cigar smoke created drifts slowly in the inside breeze to envelop a person and choke them out.

I don't do this on purpose, but I did do it to my missus the other day who copped for the drift and nearly carked it. I was pissing myself in a silent way!

My missus has certainly crosed the line over my cigars. She's on the team, so I don't want to storm her out in a gas-cloud so she's goes all moan-y about Havanas.

I didn't realise she'd get gassed out in the shack, and it was bloody funny.

Once there was a time when I'd be on a Havana and she'd get home from work or shopping, see my cigar and give it a telling look.

                      Now she doesn't comment.

                      I've won.
