  • Taken the plunge...

Well after fancying a try for ages I've just purchased myself a corn cob and a tin of dunhills early morning.Cheap and cheerful to start. Just got to dig out my granddad's old pipe tool which I got when he passed. Will report back once I've tested, most likely with where am I going wrong type questions.

Sounds good man, corn cobs are usually pretty reliable and due to the price it doesn't matter if you trash it whilst learning how to pack, light and clean a pipe (which you will do, almost inevitably.)

Petersons do some nice blends, I had their deluxe mix I think it was? That was a very nicely rounded smoke.

i only trust two types of pipes:
Medico and Brigham. Mainly because of the filter situation.....
All of these i've scoured the depths of Fleabay for. $30-$40 for old used Brighams are a few of the best buys i've ever made! Tucky, when you get some more experience, don't buy Brighams for $70-$100 in shops. Fleabay: 'Estate Pipes' all the way! They've costed as low as new Corncobs before!

OKAY OKAY, FIIIIINE. You too Paul... Larrysson pipes, everybody! They're worth the extra cash!

Good choice of baccy to start. Puff slowly and you'll have a very nice time.

                note to the wise:
Dessicate to appropriate when you pack(ate).

Leave your tobaccy on the counter for an hour or three before you back it. helps very much with lighting and what not...

So does pipe tobacco always come little moister than ideal hence the drying time? How does this effect the flavour?

If its too dry then it will burn too hot and lose all the flavours. Aromatics tend to be more moist due to the topping they add. Short drying doesn't affect flavours that much, it just make your life alot easier so you don't have to relight all the time.

Not every tobacco needs drying.... You will find what you like for each tobacco.

Will +1 marc on case dependant circumstances.
I would, however, say many regular blends stay lit longer due to atmospheric drying.

I do agree Jizza, but it's certainly important to experiment and find the right balance for your own tastes!
