Pipes have never really appealed to me ? they always seemed like an ?old man? thing (no offence to anyone!). But, having recently acquired some fake Cohiba cigars and reading about a few people that smoke the tobacco from fake cigars in a pipe, I thought I?d try it out. So, I picked up a cheap and nasty plastic pipe from the local pound shop and smoked some of the tobacco from 1 of the fake Cohibas. I managed to keep it lit OK and didn?t experience any tongue bite, but the taste was awful. I put it out when I got about half way through the bowl. I assumed the bad taste was just the dried up tobacco.
Despite this bad experience, I had watched a few youtube videos about packing technique etc. and this had sparked my interest enough to make me want to buy a proper pipe and pipe tobacco to try it out. So this afternoon I took a run down to my local B&M and picked up a corn cob pipe (All the articles I read recommended a corn cob as a first pipe) and 3 different tobaccos. The tobaccos were the kind stored in large jars ? I got the minimum amount (7g) of each as I figured this would allow me to find what I like. The tobaccos were ?Kentucky Nougat?, ?Sambuca Liquorice? and the last one just a symbol like the pi symbol for it?s name.
I got home with my new pipe and tobaccos and couldn?t wait to try the pipe, so I packed some of the gorgeous smelling Kentuky Nougat into the pipe and took a draw before lighting it, to make sure the tobacco wasn?t packed too tight. I got a great taste from the tobacco, even though I hadn?t lit it yet. I couldn?t wait to get it lit, so I didn?t wait any longer. I lit it with my butane torch lighter that I use for lighting cigars. First light was a false light, but even after re-lighting it, I couldn?t keep it lit very long (expected this as I?m sure the technique of packing, tamping and keeping it lit will only come with experience). But what was worse than having to re-light the tobacco every minute was the taste. The tobacco didn?t take anything like it smelt or even like the draw I took before lighting the pipe. On top of this, every few draws, I got a really bad taste which was exactly the same as I had experienced with the fake cigar tobacco in the other pipe.
I don?t even know how to describe the taste? Possibly a burned, charred sort of taste. I?m thinking that maybe I ?burned? the tobacco by using my torch lighter? I know that you generally don?t touch your cigar with the bare flame of the lighter to avoid a burned charred taste, so I?m hoping that?s what?s caused this taste with the pipe.
Anywho, I took some of the tobacco out of the bowl and re-lit it with a match, but was still experiencing the bad taste. I?m hoping this was just because the burned flavor was still there from the tobacco I had burned.
I really want to enjoy the pipe, so would appreciate help and advice before my 2nd attempt.
I forgot to pick up a pipe tool for tamping etc., when I got my pipe today, so any suggestions of household items that may do the job would also be good!

Puros are my first passion, of course, but lately I've found myself going for the pipe more and more. And one thing I've learned along the way, courtesy of mi amigo, senor 
, is that pipe tobacco, like newly purchased puros, should be allowed some time to breath/rest before smoking - especially when purchased in a tin!
