  • A new scam

I've just discovered a new scam that I don't think anyone on here will fall victim to but we all have naive and gullible friends and relatives. Yesterday I received an email that is a spot on replica of an iTunes receipt for a sat nav app download at ?18.99 with the usual link saying tom click here if this is an unauthorised purchase. I checked with MLW that she hadn't gone mad then clicked on the link. It took me to a link called O2 verify, once again looking exactly like an O2 page asking me to verify that I am over 18 by entering my credit card details and saying that ?1 will be charged to my card and re-credited back to my phone bill. This only works because I am an O2 customer and was reading it on my phone. I tried to access the link from my Mac just now and its dead. I suspect I would have lost a bit more than a pound if I'd fallen for it.

WOW! That's crazy. Good on you for spotting the possible fraud.

A few years ago I had a somewhat similar occurance when an alert popped up on my PC informing me that a virus was attacking my PC and that I needed to click on a link to stop the attack. Well, since young Bag Boy had been looking a porn a few minutes prior, I figured this was the cause and instantly clicked on the link. Naturally, it locked down my PC to everything except one web site that was selling a download fix.

Fortunately, I chatted with a few of UKCF's finest tech boys who advised against the download (which was only after my credit card information) and helped me clean up and unlock my computer.

It's sad to think about all the folks who don't have such access to similar resources and get ripped off by these culprits - dirty, rotten low-down americanos, no doubt!

We have a similar malware scam here that pops up on pc screens with a police logo saying that they have been caught viewing a porn site and to avoid prosecution they can pay a fine of ?100 to this address. You'd be amazed at the number of people who pay it then call us and even more who admit to looking at porn as well.
