  • Any Opinions on Jose L. Piedra

I have looked in past threads and did not see any comments on these. I have a lot of cigar mooching friends that only smoke cigars when we are drinking and when I give cigars to them. My friends know that I have cubans, so of course, that is what they want. I like to think of myself as a generous guy, but I think it is criminal to give higher end cubans to blokes that only smoke cigars when drunk and cannot fully appreciate these fine creations.

So, that's where Jose L. Piedra comes into play. These are cheap enough to give away and yet are still cuban, so my friends will still get excited over them. I also would consider smoking them myself as a yard gar or when distracted with other things, so I was wondering if they are a decent cheap smoke or should I stay away?

I have heard Guantanamera are plain terrible, so I was looking for an alternative. I realize you get what you pay for, but I have found some really decent smokes on the cheap. Thanks for the input guys!

Despite what people say about them if you can pick them up duty free in somewhere like spain for ?30 a bundle they're ok... and they are indeed perfect for the cigarette smokers who would usually be happy with a hamlet.

I always have these in my little chest humidor for exactly the reason you mention, ive always got mates coming round wanting to smoke my cigars (the Cubans of course) and i am always very loathed to give something decent as the cigarette smoker wouldn't know his arse from his elbow when it comes to a fine cigar and the non-smoker will invariably not like it and end up binning it.

Having said that the Piedra is not a bad smoke for the price, i normally smoke these when im either busy round the house with DIY or out doing the garden, so i would say they are defintely worth having around...

      Cheers, HabanoSy

You can get the occasional good one... You can't really open a bundle/5-pack to have a look... Cigarettes are cheaper.

Another great low end Cuban cigar is the Quintero Brevas, about the same price as the above mentioned and you can pick them up from puros.
          If..

I picked up a bundle for my 30th - and gave a load out to people on the forum and a recent herf. Everybody said they were ok, nothing terrible at least. They didn't smell too great to begin with, but seemed to have settled now. Not smoked one myself yet.

                      Hand or machine made?

Looking to buy a few as cheaper everyday option and I was wondering if anyone can shed a light on how these are made.

Most sites out there say these are machine made but the official Habanos says:
All seven of the Jos? L. Piedra sizes are made using the traditional "totalmente a mano, tripa corta" - totally hand made, short filler technique

Are those Cubans lying to me ?

                        He put review up, Alberto.

I had my first one today and to be honest I was dissapointed by it. That's not to say it is not a well made cigar as it burned even and constant. I just did not like it and thought it was very obviously a cheaper cigar. I have three more but once they are gone I will not be getting any more even at the price.

big advocate of these. you get a few crappers but most of the time they behave very well. For an average of ?30 for a box of 25 in the various sizes they come in (I have brevas atm), you cant complain!
