Just been for a drive in a BMW i8. From the outside it looks like a sports car from the inside a space ship. Went for a nice little drive down the motorway, boy its fast the garage guy says 300 and something bhp.
Now imagine my surprise when he tells me its a hybrid 1.5 3 cylinder engine and electric.

I know I was expecting a 8 litre super engine or something

I thought the same when I looked.
Very nice motor. Probably costs more than my house.

Just to clarify i am not buying one..lol. I went to the garage with a mate thats buying a M3, while he was sorting paperwork, I was looking at the i8, a very nice sales guy came over and asked if I would like a test drive .....like I was going to say no! :41:

I have read about these, if I remember correctly you pay next to no road tax as it's a hybrid.

i think you would be right, but the people that can afford one most probably wouldn't really care about road tax costs :849:

Yup pricey and sound like god burped but couldn't bring myself to pay that for one rather go down the e class amg range for cheaper

I was going to say that this is an incredibly cheap request. Especially if the gas fees are really that...
Then I realised it's 100 000 QUID not Canuckistani dollars.

Speaking of canuckistan, our gas prices are down to $85CAD per 100L of gas now. In some provinces, it's down to $70/100L.

x2. That's why we got the X3 instead of the MLK350.

I am sort of biased since owning a merc and love the build of them

I recently did some work for one of the Noth west's biggest car retailers and the manager has just sold his Ferrari for an i8..... He said that 4.4 seconds is an under estimate.

More like 3.5 according to him.

The sound comes out of a speaker under the car, if you turn it off they are almost silent.

sure its a good car, but the i8 looks better now i think there is a merc sports car based on the bat mobile that could be cooler

i8 looks cool and apparently a nice drive, but to me they look like they'll age terribly and will probably go straight from "futuristic" to "dated". Good demonstration of how hybrid tech can be applied in the real world though (not bloated, overweight slow monstrosities like the Prius or gazzillion pound hypercars)

Some of the Merc hybrids also look interesting, I'm sure I read of an S Class with 100mpg+ economy, and the e-class hybrid seems to work well.

The i8 is one end of the hybrid market. We're at the other. Bought an Ampera last May, Vauxhall's unsung plug-in hybrid (aka Chevy Volt). Essentially it's designed as a mass market family car, tho' only 4 seats, bit bigger than an Astra.

22214

Does 30-45 miles on battery, plus 300 on full tank of petrol engine. Sadly, does not do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, but it is still great to drive. Even in petrol mode, it's all electric transmission so no gears. Feels like a top of the range luxury car cos so quiet and smooth.

Downside: it's more expensive than a conventional car, so hasn't sold well. I wonder if BMW, Tesla, etc got it right - build an expensive, almost concept car to build interest gradually, while the mass market decides what it wants.
