Seasoning Pipe tobacco.

Does anyone put pipe tobacco away for seasoning?

If so, for how long.

Do you date the tin/containers, if so how? (So that it doesn't damage the container)

Is there potential for it to increase in value like cigars.

I am playing with it just recently, I either leave an unopened tin in a cupboard or put it into a mason jar and in a dark draw.
Just a normal sticky label On the outside of the container would suffice.

Unopened tins Will effectively last a lifetime and should not change too much until you open them though people Will dispute this.
Jarred tobacco can change drastically IME, I'm up to about a year wwith mine and it's still improving.

I don't think there's much money to be made unless it's a discontinued blend that is in high demand, one place I could see big money being spent is with Syrian Latakia which is now hardly available due to the political climate over there, also in 2004 almost the whole world supply was destroyed in a huge warehouse fire. It has been mostly replaced by Turkish Latakia but most experienced smokers say that it's not as good.

So old tins that still have the Syrian in the blend Will most likely become more and more desirable.

I have had bits of Across the pond but not enough to form a firm opinion, I have good impressions of it though. As I have of all the Frog Morton's I have tried.

GL Pease suggests that Viginia blends last upto 50ish years and Latakia something around 30+, he also says that Sobraine starts to decline at 40 years.

Maybe I misinterpreted it, but when he said it's sealed, I thought the seller meant it has the paper seal intact. He goes on to acknowledge the fact that air has got into the tin Marc. Given the tin is very old, I reckon the contents would be buggered. Imagine leaving some cigars out for many years, I think they'd suffer significantly. I remember Puff talking about a stick he'd had in cello found in a drawer for years and it smoked well, but I feel that's an exception rather than a benchmark.

Mind you, I'm only applying my own limited logic on this and I'd love to hear from anyone who could empirically contradict it. Edit in brackets: (I mean this) Genuinely, not being facetious.

Bugger, must have mis read it and missed the bit where air got in.

I have a tin of mellow Virginia that was my great grandads and that's almost full but was his last tin so it had been opened to take a pinch out.... Smells lovely but it's fooked.

That's a shame Marc. Mind you, I guess many tobaccos can be reconstituted to a pliable and smokable condition but whether it'll be anywhere near representative of what it was originally (flavour) you'd have to question.

Perhaps bring your G granddad's slowly back up again and give it a go. Having aroma could be a good sign something might be salvageable.
