  • Developing Cigar App for Phone / Tablets etc.

I'm a software developer by trade and although I develop apps primarily for the web, I have done one or two fairly simple mobile apps. for the organisation I work for.

Mobile apps are an area I'm interested in though and I have been giving more and more thought to developing a diary app. I could use for Cigars with the primary aim being to record the ones I smoke, when and how I rate them, maybe with photos. Another feature would be to record the notable features in terms of flavour, strength, how they burn, smoke etc.

I'd be really grateful if people could give me some idea of essential features they would look for in such an app. So far I have :

    Inventory
    Brand
    Line
    Vitola
    When it was bought
    Supplier
    Quantity bought
    Cost

    Smoking
    Date / Time
    Brand
    Line
    Vitola
    Construction (out of 10)
    Flavours (Select from a list)
    Strength (out of 10)
    Body (out of 10)
    Burn (out of 10)
    Overall Score (out of 100?)
    Photos
Buy More (flag to indicate with monitor on Qty remaining)

    Reporting
Diary - which were smoked on what days.
Favourites - Which ones I rated the highest
Search - Find a cigar by name

I'd add in an option to put what you drank with it and if it worked as a pairing

A generic notebook section with a set picture slot would be useful. A title and picture could serve as a thumbnail refference point on a tiled home screen.

There could be a sub section with a point system pre set and awaiting numerical input, with a macro to fill in the final score. A feature to sort by score and date ranges would also be useful.

As would recording of vitola to search by that too, and a way of recording how many you own of the recorded cigar.... Recording a smoked cigar would reduce the total number of that stick.... Obviously same brand and Vitola sticks from different box dates would need to be separated.

In my head I see something similar to "Shelves" where each entry is a "Box" each box contains a set of "Sticks" and each stick links to a "Moleskine" style notebook page with a photo thumbnail.

The cross referencing search capability would be the important and defining feature IMO.

Just incase you haven't come across it already, there is already and app for this. It's called Social Humidor.

Sounds like something and BOTL would need, essential cigar lovers app!

But if there is a similar one already, what's the USP?

Nice one mate. I'm downloading it now. Hopefully it'll have a good inventory pre-installed

BTW, Rob, I didn't mean to piss on your chips with that. Just putting it up there in case there is any copyright infringements etc, could also get some ideas or areas for improvements for your own.

I need to start using Social Humidor more regular now my collection is starting to expand. If anyone grabs it, my username is Parno. Couldn't get the facebook login to work.

Personally, I would want mine to be private. I don't understand the need to be linked into people on every single format.

I couldn't get the Facebook login to work either. The pre-installed inventory looks quite limited though..... I'll have a play around

As far as I can tell, there is no need to give out your user name, so it could be kept personnel.

Has space for the box age, how many you've got, how many you've smoked in the past, tasting notes etc. Could be an alternative for people who keep a diary or spreadsheet.

Thanks for the reply guys. Good suggestion about the drink pairing. alerts and decremented qtys would have been part of the app as well as a comprehensive search.
I'll take a look at shepsea's spreadsheet, it sounds great!

I'll also take a look at social humidor. I may have a go for for a personal project.
