  • Possible New Job Dilemna

Im currently seeking employment and went to an interview on wednesday. Pay isnt great but its an okay job I would be content doing. The interview went well and I think I have a chance, they want whoever they employ to start pretty soon which I agreed to and they said they'd contact me next week if I got the job.
Meanwhile, I had applied for another job (Job 2) which pays much better, is closer, more interesting and offers much more possibilities but would also be a tougher job to get. As soon as I got back from my interview for job #1, I got an email from Job 2 inviting me to an assessment day in around 10 days time.

My quandry is what to do if Job 1 offers me the job, I could be stuck in a position of accepting a job offer while secretly waiting on job 2's interview in the hope I get that. If im honest, not being offered job 1 makes my decisions a lot easier, but if I do get offered it, how do I delay accepting until job 2's assesssment day is over?

Can you tell them that you have a family holiday booked and you will not be able to start until a certain date?

Is there a possibility job 2 assessment day could be earlier , if I were you I'd talk to job 2 and be honest about your position nothing wrong with knowing your worth and showing that you have other options and are in demand

Take job 1, then wait and see if you get job 2. You'll be on 3 month probation which is really a time to see if you like the fit as well as the employer.

If job 2 come calling and you get it, just tell job 1 this isn't for you- usually a 1 week notice period during probation anyway.

Id take job 1 , you cant turn a job down on the off chance of another

when youve started job 1 , id tell them you may need a day off shortly for personal reasons , take it from there .

          good luck

An Employer will think nothing of letting an Employee go if it isn't working out or somebody better comes along, you need to think the same way; take Job 1 and leave for Job 2 if you get it.

Cant postpone assessment day as its for quite a big group of people not just me.
If i get offered it I think ill try and say I need time to think and see how long theyll wait for a response and ultimately probably accept any offer I may get and then see how the other oppurtunity pans out.

I wouldn't reccomend postponing a job offer, get your foot in that door asap! You can always walk back out of the door once your in..... But if it closes for whatever reason before your in then your left out in the cold.

Had a second interview for the higher paying job. Was very intense and im frankly relieved the process is over, its been hanging over me head for a week now.

Waiting on job 1 to give more information but money is slightly less than originally stated so the dynamic changes. Should find out the result of my interview on monday.

So what is the pay differential and are there any other factors/benefits?
