  • Cigar Database

I'm sure over time there has been and will be a large amount of requests for
"whats a nice powerful smoke." or "looking for something mild"
I myself struggle to decide to pick something new to smoke when searching the online retailers as I simply dont know anything about it due to lack of experience, short of working my way through buying every brand this would take time, a lot of money and their maybe a lot I dont like.

As there is a vast amount of knowledge floating around here in "cigar years" we must be able to pull it together and come up with our own guide to cigars.

Deano - Is there any way we can create some database or list that contains brand names, strengths, taste notes etc. You could create a thread where you can request an addition to the list which can then be approved and then added by the mods.

    Just an idea.

It's definitely something that we've discussed before. And it's a good point well made.

My thought is to combine the forum with a free Wiki and use that. That'll be available for anyone to add comments to, update cigar details etc, just like Wikipedia.

It just needs people to commit to using it.

I like reading the Cigar reviews others have done, gives you a good idea if the flavour profiles, size etc. would suit you
I suppose thats why it's important we all contribute to that Lounge, being a newbie not had time yet but I will

In the past I've used the topcubans 'search by strength' option when I've been looking, and used my two usual review sites.

However, I don't believe there is a site in existence that allows you to search reviews by keyword or rank by strength or other rating (appearance, construction, draw, overall score, etc.)
You can rank them in order of score or by size on cigars-review, and there are a few 'reports' available on puff (despite the 'marks out 10' scoring system there, no option to search on those scores). I don't think any other review site comes close to those two, though I'm willing to hear of others.

I think if the reviewing system provides standard options for each review (drop down box for size, marks out of ten for appearance, construction, strength, etc.), and the comments or flavours are also searchable then you have the makings of an internet-standard cigar database. There are good ones out there already but they are still lacking something. Just think how much traffic that could bring in!

          Good point.

I think that Boss has a point regarding the database. It would be especially usefull to the newer cigar smoker who is perhaps not sure of the different brands, Vitolas, strengths etc.

It's now actually implemented, with a single login with this board, but there's currently a small problem regarding the single login system.

I've been hard at work, but suffice to say, it's 99% there.

In my experience, a lot of recommendations have been anecdotal - often a case of, "You tried this cigar, a b or c? Try that, it's a darn good smoke".

It often turns out to be a standard smoke.

Such a database would bring ca's together, and would definitely have some "cigar years" in experience, as a previous post noted.

              Good idea!

Dont know if it's possible but can you add a rating against the cigar like a thumbs up or thumbs down, one vote per cigar, per user. Kind of like how the daily mail rate comments on their website.
