  • Greetings from Nicaragua!

    Hi all,

    I'm Danny from Gibraltar.

I used to work for Lewis Stagnetto Importers & Distributors in Gibraltar and also C.Gars Ltd in London, where I worked at Turmeaus in Mayfair.

I've been living in Nicaragua since May 2014 and currently work for Mombacho Cigars, a boutique cigar company who have their factory in Granada, Nicaragua and International HQ in Toronto, Canada.

I used to have another account on this forum but was very inactive, although I frequently read the posts. Thus, I wanted to re-introduce myself and start fresh.

I look forward to using this forum more often and engaging with fellow BOTLs.

    Regards,

    Daniel

        Cheers!

I hope I can help out with any questions regarding Nicaraguan cigars in particular and also anything to do with the production side of things (in Nicaragua specifically) as I work in a cigar factory 6 days a week so I can give some insight into that.

Hello Danny and welcome (back) to UKCF. Sounds like an interesting career you've had so far. I've not heard of Mombacho but will keep an eye out for what's available here in the UK.

                          Hi Daniel,

Does your company produce it's own cigars or for others as house blends?

                            Hi Niela,

All our cigars are produced in our factory in Granada.

Every cigar which we produce is made with 100% Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos and made totally by hand.

We focus on our own brands, which are Mombacho (Tierra Volcan in the US) and Liga Maestro, which was originally produced for the Italian market but will soon be available in the US and elsewhere.

We only make 1 private lable which is Noli. Noli is a cigar shop in Milan and is actually the oldest cigar shop in Italy, and one of the mose prestigious.

We want to focus on our own cigars as we are a boutique company and are totally committed to quality-control. Thus, we prefer to produce less cigars but ensure they are all made to the highest standards.

Most factories in Nicaragua will have their rollers produce between 300-500 cigars a day per pair (they work in pairs, with a bonchero, who wraps the fillers into binder to produce the bonche, and the rolero, who adds the wrapper).

The rollers are paid per cigar, so smaller cigars will have different prices per cigar than larger ones, or more complicated vitolas like perfectos etc will equal more money per cigar for the roller - also cigars which will be more expensive will have a higher price.

The way we work is that we produce between 250-300 a day, depending on size and vitola. All the rollers get a fixed rate, and we make up for this buy paying them a more competitive salary, will also provide lunch for all our staff. Essentially, we are paying them a higher wage yet they are making less cigars than they would in other factories.

All cigars are draw-tested and aged for a minimum of 6 months before being boxed and ready for export or retail in our lounge.
