  • First time pipe smoker

    Hi All,

Went into my local tobacconists to buy a Cigar yesterday. While I was in there the pipes caught my eye and I ended up buying myself a fairly cheap pipe and some tobacco which the lady at the tobacconists recommeded would be nice for a first time pipe smoke.

Well this is what I got:

The pipe cost me ?17 and the tobacco was only a few quid too! I got the tamping tool also.

After watching a quick video on Youtube on how to pack a pipe, I gave it a go. I used the three stage method and overall it wasnt too bad.

Lunchtime came around and I decided to go for a little lunchtime smoke. I got almost all the way to the bottom of the bowl after the toasting light and then the proper light. Was quite proud of that. However there was about half a centermeter at the bottom which did not burn. It was just packed too tightly and looked a little damp?

Overall, I enjoyed the experience of smoking a pipe. I found it was a lot more mellow but a fair amount more difficult to get the same quantity of smoke as a cigar.

What do you guys think of the Tobacco she recommended me? and what might you recommend? The lady in the tobacconists was very helpful and has a large stock of other blends of pipe tobacco!

Tobacco wise, if I put it into a jar when I get a larger amount will it be okay in there? Do I need to add a humidity pack or anything?

Nice looking pipe you got there kid, erinmore is one of my favourite pipe tobacco but I prefer the flake it burns a lot slower
and in my opinion has more flavour.

No need to add humidity packs , a jar is fine make sure it's air tight tobacco will keep better for longer.

Yeh, I think I packed the first layer a little too tightly and is the reason it didn't burn so well on the last part.

Thanks, its only a cheap on but I like the style of it!

Yeh, I got a good 30-40 mins out of it at lunch. Was perfect after eating my lunch! Came back to the office ready to kick some ass!

Just put the Jar somewhere cool and dry?

It was a tasty mix! I got some slight ginger notes from it. Big fan of ginger!

The smoke for me that was coming out was nice and cool but the bowl itself was quite warm! I like the overall flavours, quite different from a cigar!

You tend to find the thicker the pipe bowl the less hotter it feels
remember buying my first pipe looked similar to your one
after 5 minutes puffing gently I coulden't hold it, the bowl was a bit on the thin side so became too hot.

Nice looking pipe, I have only tried Erinmore mix once, it was one of the first blends I tried. I didn't really care for it, it may have been because I tried a cherry blend around the same time and preferred that. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with erinmore, it just wasn't for me at the time and I will probably try it again as my tastes change. Like most pipe smokers I'm working my way through a lot of different styles of blends. At the moment I'm into Balkan blends, I'm a bit of a Latakia junkie I tried some Gawith Hogarth number 7 broken flake and found it to be very gingery if you like ginger or it might just be my taste buds playing tricks on me.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

The bowl becomes comfortably warm for mine. Its nice when its cold outside!

Well I like Erinmore so far, I had another smoke of it yesterday. Same problem with there being half a centremeter at the bottom not burning... However I am going to give other blends a try as well.

I will try a look out for the Gawith hogarth number 7 next time I go into the tobacconists! I think currently the stuff I have got will last me until Xmas. Might get some more blends over the xmas period as I have got a fair amount of time off...

Smoke half a bowl so you can build up enough carbon cake at the bottom of the bowl. You can get videos on YouTube that will show you how to break your pipe in. The cake will protect your pipe bowl and it will help to absorb a bit of moisture. If you're getting gurgle run a pipe cleaner down it, that should help too. Probably all the guys here are more experienced pipe smokers than me and will offer some great advice. This is where I asked the questions and got the advice.

Forgot to say that number 7 will ghost your pipe, but it is a nice smoke. You could give go tobaccos a try, they sell 10g samples. Which is good if you're starting out.
