  • NUB Habano Torpedo

{Flashback 15 Months} 'Cool shape,' I thought, 'neat idea, I'd look pretty fockin cool with that thing in my mouth.'

'These new NUBS could really take off, make people think you know. The slickness of the branding's a little OTT, but we're all suckers for flashy copy and a shiny new website. No use railing against it, I must have one.'

{FF. Today was that day} The smell at cold was pleasant and generic- reassuringly meaty, but it drew like a straw.

It transpired quickly that my initial optimism about the size, and its benefical effects on my image was catastrophically misplaced: I looked like a dick.

'No matter,' I thought, 'This is da FUTUR, bring on da FLAVA.'

In general, it's pretty standard cheap NC wrapped in an irritating package. The wrapper was thick and burnt badly, the draw was far too loose.

Flavourwise it was less rich than NCs can be, and the lack of change was conspicuous. It tasted, overwhelmingly, of cigar. Only mildly unpleasant in itself, but gives the icky, guilty feeling of burning money.

The NUB is a cigar that toys with a new democratic semiology (it is no wonder that the Oliva name is nowhere to be seen). But it fails for three reasons:

1.) Its taste disengages the senses.
2.) The shameless vapidity of its ethos and existence is impossible to avoid.
3.) Rappers look stupid enough already, they know, and they know we know: this is a step too far.

I had the Habano one and thought it was quite nice after 5 mins.

          Nub Sungrown

Also known in the US as the Nub Habano
          Wrapper: Habano
          Filler: Nicaragua
          Size: Nub 466 (4 x 66)
          Strength: Medium to Full

          I didn't smoke the torpedo.

          Appearance

It was beautifully presented with a neat, rich, tanned horse chestnut colouring. The bands are minimalist and modern, which I found attractive.

          Construction

Firm to the touch and seemingly densely packed. These are well made sticks with the one I had, having few veins. Faultless to the eye.

          Taste

The pre-light draw found a sweetness on my lips, which was pleasant. The Nub Habano definately gives you a sense of where that Habano wrapper gets its influence from and there's a little bit of the motherland in there. On lighting, I got an immediate nudge of spice.

I'm not the world's most descriptive when it comes to picking out flavours (sorry folks), but I was aware of that spice remaining subtley throughout, accompanied by leather and I felt, a hint of liquorice. Not a bad combo at all, and it didn't smoke unfamiliarly. The availability of flavour did depend on the volume of smoke...

          Draw/Ash/Burn

No tight draw dramas for a densely packed stick. I did question whether my club/shamrock punch probably was a bit 'open' for this particular stick and I found the draw too light and I was unable to get a large volume of smoke.

The ash held well, but was effected by the issues I had with an uneven burn throughout. Within the first 10mm, the stick was struggling to burn evenly and even with corrections including dampening small areas and re-touching with the lighter here and there, it didn't come good. To top it off, the wrapper burst in the last third, which saw me putting it down sadly. I store at 65% RH, so over humidification was not the issue. Any feedback would be welcome.

          Overall

The Nub has been promoted as a cigar that provides a sweet-spot from the off as opposed to one where it builds in the second, or last third. This is attributed to its impressive, and unique, dimensions.

I can't subscribe to this theory on the basis that whilst smoking a stick, the crescendo of flavours (IMO) acumulate and increase as a concentration of such build up towards the mid/end as the result of drawing smoke through it (if that makes sense). The Nub, I feel, behaves in the same way.

It was a shame I had the issues I did as it probably didn't do the Nub justice. However, I would have one again and I think they should be included in your 'must try' list.

I would absolutely agree with many of the things cj said: The draw was so loose that the smoke was thin and papery. The burn was poor, which is not good in such a short fat cigar. I too noticed mine bulging toward the end, it didn't quit split, but was enough to worry me.

I am merciful man; I could forgive the focused cynicism of the idea, and I could forgive it's shoddy execution, but in tandem they make me feel used.

I have had a couple of the Habano Torpedos. I enjoyed them, but not to a point where I felt excited about them.

Also, I had some trouble with uneven burning, but that may be because I am new to cigars and thus need to perfect my lighting technique.
Warning: Smoking cigars may cause a slow and delicious death.

I tried a nub thanks to mothman and the experience was ok, but could of been better. I loved the appearance, in the past Ive had big gauge cigars and ive found getting good smok was an issue, well with a 60 gauge I was having the same issue. The flavors were quite nice, but I think my issue was getting it lit! the size of the thing lol.

I have another and a torpedo, im going to age them a bit and when I fancy a big gauge, well I get more than my moneys worth

I have had only one Nub (habano) and that drew fine. Some mild burn issues but overall I enjoyed it.

Apparently there is NUB Limited Edition 2009!
It's double wrapped with maduro and connecticut wrapper and only 3000 of them were made...
