  • Hello from Big Al

    Hi,

My name is Alan (what a surprise!) and I'm a cigar smoker (another surprise!). I'm also pushing 61 years old and have smoked since I was aged 13. Most of those years have been spent on the fags. I still am. However, I have spent periods of time exclusively on the pipe and I have always smoked the occasional cigar. My very first one (aged about 14) made me sick as a pig. I am sure that it was an Havana but don't ask me to remember the type.

I am doing what I can now to wean myself off fags. Not easy. I do like them. But I also like cigars. Indeed, smoke for smoke there is simply no comparison between a cigar and a cigarette. But I'm sure you all know that anyway!

I must emphasise that I consider myself a complete beginner when it comes to cigars.

I do love proper Cubans but they are pretty expensive. Not really for me at the sort of prices they sell at. I have tried a few via Cigar.com and CubanCrafters. However, my favourite cigar I have only ever seen for sale in this country. It is the "rich maduro" La Rica (Nicaraguan) brand. I love 'em in Robusto, Torpdeo and their version of Toro which I think they call Perfecto. Beautifully rich, gorgeous taste and a great buzz too. Man O' War are similar but not in the same class for richness.

Another cigar I like is one that may well be disdained for being a) machine made; b) short filler c) cheap and that is Vasco da Gama Claro Sumatra. At 24 Euro a box of 25 I find them a genuinely enjoyable smoke, very mild at first (too mild) but gets better as it goes down.

Anyway, I hope to learn lots from you all.

    Alan

          Big Al's in the hizzy!

Sorry, senor Big, but I'm afraid you are too young to join this forum. Come back in four years.

MY GOD MAN!!! You're older than senor Robusto, the resident geezer!

Oh well, now that you're here, welcome Mr. Al and try to enjoy yourself while you still can. And don't let the "crazy mexican" frazzle your nerves . He does that to all the newbies.

Names TJ, TJCoro, and wait a minute...I AM the crazy mexican!!!

Hi Big Al and welcome, you will find plenty of useful information about NC and CCs.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Cheers folks and thanks for the great welcome. I'm really not sure about 20 Churchills a day Barney. Even Churchill didn't manage that! No wonder that put the kybosh on the fags though!

I suppose the Danneman Moods are even more non derigeur than my Vasco's Simon. I'll have to try them! My test is whether I enjoy it. It works!

                            Big Al

You're not much of a man.

You were sick as a dog over your first cigar at 14?

Same age as me, tho I took to it with such ease that I stole a second straight away!

Welcome to the forum. Nice first post!
