  • Matching pipe to tobacco?

I have a pipe that i occassionally light up,with a simple american black cherry mix. Its a turkish meerschaum that was bought for me, more in jest than anything, about 20 odd years ago. I enjoy it when i do get to smoke it albeit i am sure could fill/packthe bowl better so i spend less time with matches in hand!

anyhow, it struck me that there are so many styles of pipe that there has to be a reason for each design. The long stemmed churchwarden (?) pipes which may suit a hot burning tobacco, so the smoke has chance to cool before you taste it, vs some of the stubbier styles which deliver it almost immediately to your mouth. Or perhaps something more functional, short & stout so not hard to keep between teeth while doing something, and long stemmed so you can easily cup the bowl while seated?

Is there sense in this or is it just down to the style statement you want to make with the pipe.
    thx

I may be wrong but I think the Churchwardens are for when reading, keep the smoke out of your eyes

      That sounds plausible Budgie.

I can certainly vouch that wardens help cool the smoke.

Never though it about it really, I buy them with a style of tobacco in mind I.e. A thick walled pipe I use for aromatics, thinner walls for cooler burning tobacco. I have two small pipes for a quick 15-20 minute smoke. I have a VaPer on order at the moment so I will choose a pipe for that style
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

I only have a small collection of pipes but have definitely found that aromatics smoke much better in a wider tobacco chamber, narrow deep chambers make them bite like Mike Tyson for me.

In my opinion pipes with thicker bowls won't burn hot, and you get a cooler smoke remember buying my first basket pipe
after lighting up within 10 minutes coulden't hold the pipe too hot to handle.
