I was packing up the car to go out on Friday morning, smoking my corn cob, when a neighbour from round the corner came over and complimented me on the gentle waft of pipe smoke. Turns out he is a Brother of the Briar and mostly smokes this lovely tiny fully bent stem pipe, like a Lovat that's drooped.

I'd been raring myself up to ask about his very elderly Labrador which sits out front when gardening is being done, but it was so nice to make an instant bond and get chatting over such an old fashioned (in a good way) hobby. He was taken aback that GQ is closing, and we lamented the loss, but it turns out there's an old fashioned B&M place a few towns over that I never knew about...

Oddly enough, I was doing an evening gig a couple of weeks ago and at intermission I smoked my pipe and got four or five very positive "that's such a nice thing to smell again" typed comments.

I guess if you're smoking a pipe, you must be doing things right!

Nice one, last time I had conversation like that with neighbour (which happens to be landlady's mother...) I've heard that landlady will come round with new smoke and CO2 detectors...

As long as you're smoking outside Tom, she'll have to stick them in the garden then. Can't see them lasting long out there with winter approaching

No doubt about it, pondering moose - pipe smoking receives far more compliments than disgusting glances.

Wish the same were true about cigars.

I've had a few disgusted glances at least with cigars, oddly mostly at one railway crossing near where I do occasional work. The counterpoint is that the caf? on the other side of the tracks are really cool about me stinking up the outside, and happily bring me out my coffee.

I do take a little bit of perverse pleasure at the looks. No children or obvious asthmatics, but recently some person who looked like they might be very devoted to artisanal, ecologically and ethically sourced, heritage breed, mung bean gruel gave me the most heinous "you disgust me" glare. Queue a extra big puff, aimed away, but fantastically drifting back over me, and then them.

Cigars are vegetarian, we should all remember that. We're *being* healthy! Actually, that's obviously my new Sig line :-D

It's funny how smoke knows to go near those who hate it! It always seems to slap the face of those who object most! To be fair to non smokers when I've smoked cigars in public folk haven't minded, though I'm very mindful of who's about and where I am before lighting up. You do get the odd one though.
