looking for a compact pipe with a generous bowl. something that ought to be easy to nurse outdoors...and leave in the side of my mouth while walking or shooting

thinking a bowl in the morning and a cigar in the afternoon! recommendations welcome.

i'm keen not to spank a load of cash on it as it might get bashed dropped and stuffed in pockets, but at the same time wouldnt like to buy cheap junk as a false economy.

also does the chalk/wire baskets make life easier for keeping a bowl going without too much bother?

cheers chaps!

Never used one myself, but I hear good things about the pocket pipe.

A friend of mine has a pocket pipe, and whilst it's nifty, he says that with use the swivel joint stops being airtight and needs repair. In his case, with functional but unsightly blutak. Maybe just his particular pipe.

I'd second the vote for a corncob. They're cheap yet dependable and available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes including scarily giant bowls.

I use one whilst wandering the woods, when I manage to get any shooting in, general outdoorsy stuff. With a little spring loaded pipe lid, they're even pretty weatherproof.

P.S. I sometimes use one of the little wire baskets at the bottom the bowl. I wouldn't say they effect manageability, but you end up with a drier smoke. They also reduce the capacity of the bowl for better or worse depending.

The thing is we are all different in your shoes I would spend the money once get a good quality pipe and cherish it
good quality pipes come what they call a pipe sock and if like you say take it with you when shooting
just be carefull and put it in a pocket that has nothing else in it.

What about a Parker? Very well made, generally, and can be picked up for less than 30 squid usually...

thanks Chris. Some of them look nice... typically the one I like most is out of stock where I am browsing!!!

What say you about Molina... they appear similarly priced.

I've been GQ'ing as they seem to have an impressive catalogue.... anywhere else worth a squint? By PM if needs be?

thank you

Also a good call! I have three (a Rhodesian, a Zulu and a semi-bent Dublin). They're decent to good quality (imho). I do take one of them "outside", but devote a particular pocket to it.

But then equally, horses for courses, we're all different and smoke differently.

Never tried one TBH Matt : /

I've not bought many new pipes from within the UK I don't think. My Smoking Shop has a fair few ValeTudoGuy might have a few names to drop into the equation He's very experienced.

I'm sure you've already found something by now but thought I'd weigh in anyway! I got myself a Bones pipe from Morgan Pipes. They come in many styles, and even have an "outdoorsman" range. It's unstained briar, so gradually builds up its own colour with time and use. Found mine nice and handy in me pocket for a recent trip down to London
