  • Birmingham Cigar Club

Tomorrow evening I shall be defending my title as holder of the Janet Powell Shield for holding the ash the longest and also competing for the award of the Cullet, a competition where the Secretary of the Birmingham Cigar Club and the Secretary of the Birmingham Pipe Smokers Club compete in a (grudge!) match.

Birmingham Cigar Club is a wonderful little institution, if you're in the area you would be more than welcome to join us at one of our dinners which are held either at a local Gentlemen's Club (as in old-fashioned gentlemen's club, not one of those like Spearmint Rhino!) or a local hotel. There are two or three held each year, and membership of the club is ridiculously cheap. (I think it's about ?7 a year). Meals are also very good value, and the members of the club are all wonderful people, with some real characters in attendance.

If you want any more information then please send me a PM. If you want to 'try before you buy' I will post information about the next event in plenty of time and you would be more than welcome to come along and meet us.

    Rhiannon.

That sounds fantastic! Good luck in holding on to the ash and the trophy!

Would you know if your association is part of a wider network across the UK? I'm at the cross-Channel ferry end of Kent. I'd love to know if such gatherings exist down this way.

It sounds fun - but it also sounds quite old-fashioned. I like that sort of thing!

Maybe you could take some photo's of the night and post them on here, especially if you manage to hold onto your ash crown?

What cigar did you smoke to win last year, and what are you having to defend the title?

Unfortunately we didn't hold the competition last night as the hotel balcony and weather combined to turn it into a 'who can light the cigar' competition rather than an ash holding one! Never mind, I did enjoy a very nice Rocky Patel - have no idea what the name of it was, Robusto sized with a 2 inch gold wrapper on the foot. We're going to hold the competition at some other venue in the near future, one where there is better shielding from the elements.

I will post some pictures when I've figured out how to do it.

Okay I think I have it sussed. I have some pictures of the Club but I can't put them on the internet without the permission of all the people in them, and I don't have contact details for everyone. Here's one of me and my second favourite alcoholic drink, Port!

and this is me and my friend Lou at a fancy dress party (we don't normall dress so outrageously!) I'm on the right.

how did the port pair with the cigar? I've had some good and some bad port/cigar combos. Just curious.

I would love port and cigar pairing ideas. I don't like alcohol greatly, and I personally feel whisky knackers the taste of a cigar. The best whisky does a more destructive job. All imo!

                      But port goes well!

I find that Port goes very well with the type of cigar I like (medium strength maduros, robusto sized or larger). In my opinion, sweet red dessert wines such as Banyuls also go very well too. Of course, we all have our own different tastes.
