• I know nothing about pipes

As the title suggests, I know nothing about pipes. I am interested in trying one out but have a few questions:

    1. How does the type of pipe influence the experience?

    2. What pipe and tobacco would you suggest for a beginner?

    3. Is smoking a pipe like smoking a cigar or do you inhale?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm a pipe newbie myself, although 1.5 years in I've gone deep & have a lot of pipes and tobaccos already. Good starting point is a corn cob and a selection of samples from a wide range of online suppliers. Smoke a pipe like sipping whisky for best results, cool smoke is the goal as with cigars. You can inhale smoke if that's your preference, as with cigars.

Good idea, mate! Pipes are a great alternative to the almighty puro. There is a learning curve, however, and it's easy to get discouraged in the beginning - what with all the crap.... errr, I mean, ACCOUTREMENTS, that you have to carry around. And the cleaning! MY GOD THE CLEANING!

But don't give up and enjoy the journey. It takes time to learn how to properly load and smoke a pipe. As a start, there are some good YT videos on how to properly pack a pipe.

      Good Luck!

In your shoes i'd buy a reject briar pipe most tobacconist have them in a basket marked rejects. The other thing is shape do you like a straight pipe slightly curved or a bent pipe. Loads to choose from ,if you don't like the idea of reject pipes you can buy decent one's for about ?20 to ?25.
Concerning pipe tobacco well that's a mine field you got a choice of loose tobacco aromatic and non aromatic mild to full bodied smokes
too mild your like to get what is called tongue burn tingling feeling on the tongue, as for pipe tobacco you get what they call ready rubbed or flake with flake you get a slower cooler smoke in my opinion. Then you get packet tobacco's and tin tobacco's smoking a pipe is very relaxing don't keep puffing hard on the pipe because the tobacco will burn a lot quicker giving a harsh smoke and your pipe will get very hot to handle last of all let your pipe cool down before attempting to remove the stem and clean the pipe with pipe cleaners.Finding the right tobacco is something you can't do in a few days my advice would be try the loose tobacco which is weighed out to how much you want half oz is ideal.Anymore questions just ask incase I diden't say above.

Thank you TonyN for taking the time to create such an in-depth and informative post. I will definitely look at the flake as I would be looking for a slow, cool smoke. I like the idea of a reject briar pipe too; giving the right sort of experience for less outlay.

Good move, as SJ says you can't go wrong with a cob to start out with, cheap and great to learn with. The choices of different flavours pipe tobacco has to offer is also amazing, as others have suggested you can get sampler packs from the sponsers of this forum that's a good way to start out. If you find that it's for you move on to a briar pipe, there are a lot of good estate pipes on offer if you don't want to take the plunge into buying a new pipe straight away, you can get a great pipe for not a lot of money ( my collection is mainly estate buys) not really had any bad ones. You can't go wrong with Peterson, Stanwell, Parker, savinelli to name a few.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

Quick update: took the plunge and bought my first pipe and tobacco today. Was planning to light it up tonight but after a long week of work, just don't have the energy. Will look forward to it over the weekend.

I went for an Aldo Morelli Fiorita with some (I think) Cherry Vanilla. Spent a long time holding the various pipes; this one sat nicely in the hand.
