Can you get, or recommend, a good whisky for under ?20?

I do buy and like the Bailey Nicol Jarvie, but not sure if it rates.

What are your thoughts ladies and gentlemen?

What type of whisky do you enjoy? It will help to make a suggestion if we knew your preferences?

    Peaty? Smokey? Strong/Mild? etc

        Super markets.

You do get special offers on at the supermarkets CJ, and can sometimes pick up a bottle of Highland park or Glenmorangie in the ?20-?25 range.

Ok, been thinking about this and I think you may struggle a little for a good single malt under ?20, unless you come across a good deal in a shop or supermarket.

For a few pounds more however you could get:

          Macallan 1999 at ?22.99.

Very good brand and has a hint of smokeyness about it wth good deep flavours.

Isle of Jura 10yr at ?21.99

Also hints of smoke and very smooth, not as deep as the Macallan and has a sweet/salt thing going on. Easy to drink this one.

Between the two I would pay the little extra and get the Macallan. Are you limited to ?20 as I can have a look about the places I use to see what they have at that level.

            Indeed.

Two very good whiskys indeed Paulie, and at that price you cannot go wrong.

PS.Kicked the arse out of a bottle of Lagavulin two nights ago.

It does not get any better than that IMO.

Cheers chaps, the price was put there as a bit of a benchmark really, not a restraining order, out of curiosity.

Don't go out of your way Paulie, thanks though, as I'm not buying this week or anything.

I've still got an inch or two of a Bushmills 10 year single to polish off.

              Bushmills they all cry!!!!
              I'm outta here

Will do Paulie. Must try one of your recommendations out of curiosity.
                  Thanks for the input

Oddbins are always doing malts at cheap prices. Malt of the Month etc. If there's one nearby, they should be worth checking out.

My vote also goes to the "special offers" for anything under about ?25. Otherwise, my vote goes to Slieve na gcloc (great spelling) which you can find here: http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/sh...e-na-gCloc.htm

I haven't seen it in a B&M shop since Oddbins stopped selling it, but at ?16 a bottle it is my bargain whisky.

No probs. I got an Aberlour Glenliver from Odbinns a couple of months ago for 18.99! It was delicious but didn't last long enough! Even my wife liked it!

                          Kinda explains the disappearance.....

It is definitely a great name. I remember first trying it at a blind tasting, where it was about the fourth or fifth sample, and general opinion being that it was worth two or three times the price.

Bought a bottle of Isle of Jura last night for ?19.19 (?6 off). I really liked it and it went particularly well with the Boli CJ I had on the go.

                              Thanks for all the input
