  • Im opening a cigar shop on Second Life

For those of you who don't know what second life is, it's kind of like an online game, where you can create visual content. You can make money from these things. Basically you can make anything on this game/ platform. 3d models, textures, clothing for the players, weapons, anything. You make things from 3d shapes called prims. A quick google around will get you some info.

Well anyway, Ive always wanted to open a smoke shop in SL, which is what im working on now. It's like a lounge and will have a humidor full of smokes which people can buy. I'll be parodying habanos brands because you cant put copyright stuff on SL as youre making money essentially. I made a video walkthrough of the building so far.

Also heres an example of how I'd parody the brands , turned out pretty good I think!:

    Freaky looking model you used...

PS. Is Second Life worth spending your free-time on? I've been thinking of giving it a go...

Please elaborate, I've heard similar comments before. How does this money making scheme work. Are there really people (morons) who pay for intangible objects?

PS. As you clearly make a net profit, I wouldn't include you in this group.

well you create 'stuff' and you can buy land or a rental spot and you can sell your stuff if you want to. I started off with WWII stuff, uniforms and that cause I was into that at the time. So I set up my first shop. Got a little rented spot in a 'shoppin mall' , stuff started to sell, pretty neat system.

People go to your shops (they can find them via search engines ingame), and they see it and buy it. I had uniforms, so the people could 'wear' what I made. I expanded the WWII shop a little over the years, dont really add much but its ok.

I made another Pro wrestlin shop, that brings in the most money, sells rings and attire and stuff. People have started up lil feds where they put on shows and such, Im not really into it but making the stuff was fun. Its good because I dont have to do ANYTHING except for renewing the rents on my pieces of land. Money just generates, literally!

Not too fussed on making the humidor a good money maker, itll be more of a chill place / fun project for once

I was going to take the piss, mainly because I've never used Second Life. Hey ho.
Having had a look and hearing the word 'money', I think this is a splendid idea! Olivar amused me too. All kinds of silly things like Fart-A-Gas and Punchup popped into my head then...

Will it run really badly if my graphics aren't up to scratch?

I was thinking Spartacus or somehtin for Party. Yeah it should run ok really, its mainly memory / processor dependant, theres all sorts of changable options so you should be alright

I saw this documentry on Channel 4 about people having relationships on Second Life, it was all a bit strange, I had a look on it once myself but didnt really get it, but if it makes money sounds good to me!

I think this is a great idea but I think you really need to think hard about how much time you spend on this project.

I have heard that the authorities are going to ban smoking on Second Life, you might want to check out www.banvirtualsmoking.com

Well its clearly more damaging to our culture than shoot 'em up games with gangsters and assassins! :-p
Warning: Smoking cigars may cause a slow and delicious death.

PS. Forgot to add Mr B - nice walk through. Perhaps a nice little mezzanine deck and some window up top?
