  • Humidors

I have a great little desktop humidor that holds about 50 cigars which i keep in the lounge for day to day.

HOWEVER... and here's the crunch... i have a couple of humidors i made myself for storing boxes of cigars in.

Each holds about 6 or 7 boxes and i measure the humidity and temperature with a digital monitor. i've never had a humidor keep cigars in such perfect condition. They cost me about ?30 - ?40 each to make and probably took about 2 hours to do.

I saw the idea on-line and thought i'd give it a bash. Whilst they are certainly not things you'd want out on display they are great for keeping/aging cigars in.

Basically you get a cool box (the sort of thing you take beers to the beach in) for about ?10, line it with 5 mm thick strips of spanish cedar which smells great and keeps the weevils away (probably about ?20). the cedar doesn't need to perfectly line the box, i attached 7 pieces (one for the bottom, one each for the short sides and two each for the long with strong sticky back velcro).

Get two small tupperware type boxes (about the size of a thick paper back) drill loads of small wholes in the lids and cut a piece of oasis (the green stuff they use for flower arranging, very cheap) to fit the boxes.

Soak one piece of oasis in distilled water and the other in propylene glycol (order it in a chemists, its about ?7 for a large bottle which should last years). the humidor mixtures you buy are basically glycol and distilled water (with a little unnecessary fungicide).

Prepare the humidor the way you usually would i.e. place a glass of distilled water in there for a few days. you can rub down the cedar with distilled water if you want as the cigars are going in in boxes although its a little unnecessary.

The two tupperware boxes go in with the cigar boxes.

You may need to experiment with the amounts of water and glycol and you can mix them 50/50 and just use one box if you like. i actually use that mixture in my desktop too.

If you fancy the idea have a go, if not don't. Might not suit everyone, but I wouldn't be without mine.

Good stuff Drewmidorn. I have heard of this being done before (was it Wilkey/Ginseng you got the idea off?) And have been thinking of making a couple for myself rather than splash out on another big humidor.

I was looking for humidors on line years ago and stumbled across a few pages and gave it a go... to be honest if its just for storage as opposed to a nice piece of furniture i wouldn't even think about buying a humidor!

Give it a go. I'll take some pictures later in the week of mine and try to post them.

I think I will, as is it just for storage, and you're the second person to have recommended this setup for ageing ( + it's even cheaper than a coolerdor). I'm not sure I'll going to go for the ceadar inlay though, hopefully the cedar on the boxes and cabs coupled with some beads will be enough to regulate humidity properly. It'd be good to see some pics of yours.

I have a wooden wine bottle presentation box by Louis Jadot, and the bugger would easily hold about 100+ cigars and although I was contemplating on converting it into a humidor, I've decided to just use it for as extra storage for various bits'n'bobs

With the cost of living being extortionately high, I've been looking at cheaper homemade alternatives for a cigars humidor, and the "Tupperdors" being easy to make and set up, I've decided to make a larger version of these humidors using a large plastic storage tuppaware box, that has the same air tight kind of closure, but with a larger capacity of 110+ ltr to allow for storing more cigars

The idea is to get a few old wooden cigar boxes and lining the sides and base of the storage box with Spanish Cedar, and just use a digital Hygrometer and a good quality humidifier

I'll see how things pan out as I go along and will post some pics up of the finished product

I thought that this is an idea worth considering for all fellow cigar smokers, especially with the cost of living being more expensive nowadays

Have any of you good people already tried this and if so, what do youguys think?

Hi willie, yea i converted an edwardian mahogany glass display cabinet about a year ago it holds about 40-50 boxes of cigars, its mahogany & cedar interior, it holds humidity smack on too.
Im very pleased with it, i have a few large desk tops aswell as a mini cabinet humidor too.

What your creating should be just the job, i have heard of other cigar smokers doing the same thing.
Well done hope it goes well mate

              Monte.

Thanks Monte, I really appreciate it buddy

That sounds pretty awesome, if you can post them, it would be awesome to see a few pics of the converted humidor

I'm not exactly sure what the measurements will be, untill I can get a few old cedar cigar boxes, but I'm hoping that these storage box humidors will be able to hold around 200/300+ cigars, but that's a complete guess at the moment

I'm going to try and make the storage box humidor in such a way, that I can have a number of different compartments, to hold batches of 25 cigars in each compartment to allow space for more different brands of cigars within the same humidor

I'm definitely going to take the time to plan this out right, not only to be able to store as many cigats as possible, but to store them in a way that I can allow the humid air to circulate around the cigars evenly

Now the barrel WC + CH, is pretty awesome, and the cabint is mighty pretty piece of furniture

EDIT: - The 110 Ltr storage boxes would be able to hold a heck of alot of cigars, especially if they are cedar lined and the cigars are unboxed

With the design I have in mine, in a 35 Ltr storage box, I would be able to store upto 400+ cigars , and so, I'm definitely going to start working on this in the next few weeks and I'll see how things go

In the words of Father Jack Hackett....... "AAAAGGHHH FECK IT!!!"

I've lost the patience and the plot with storage container humidors and have decided that I'm gonna scrap that idea and just get a 100 ct humidor instead lol

I know I'm being a lazy bugger about this and being somewhat impatient, but it's be nice to have something to keep the sticks in, that doesn't resemble something that should be in cupboard or in a storage unit lol
