  • Cigar investment

    Hi all,

I saw a thread over in the wanted section for Cohiba 2004 EL Sublimes, which appear to be quite expensive now due to their short supply.

I have heard of people investing in cigars and later selling for profit but i wondered how common this is? I assume 'investment grade' cigars would be those in limited production like the EL and RE releases?

Investment grade wine is usually stored in bonded warehouses where the conditions (temp, humidity etc) can be closely monitored and to some extent guaranteed, and therefore any buyer is able to expect the wine to be of a good quality. Is there something similar for cigars?

    Cheers.. MB

My guess MB would be that you could purchase some fine puros ,of investment quality and price, from one of the larger cigar stores and enquire about storage and/or membership to enable storage in their on- site facilities.

TomTom in London allow you to store boxes in their shop. No idea what the cost of that is though.

Many of the fine cigar shops in NYC have storage places for cigars, it costs around $150 a year, last time I checked. If NYC has places, I'm sure London has got to have a few also.

I've got quite a few boxes that I've bought for investment...

Do you think I need to get them in a private keep or bonded warehouse for them to show their true value in years to come?

Or am I good keeping them at home in closely monitored conditions (after all a cigar you can check if its still good unlike a fine wine...?)

              Comments/thoughts/opinions appreciated...

              Thanks, HabanoSy

i dont know of any shop that will let other know that your box came from them. It may be better to store them at a cigar celler/bank/shop for you peice of mind. If you can keep them at just as good Rh/temp then no reason to keep them els where. Cigars that were stored at dunhill 20+ years long are now at a premium becasue of that little sticker that says dunhill on it. No im not talking dunhill cigars them self.

Yes there are lots of places that will store your cigars for you. i know of a few in Swiss, and a few other around the world.

I think you would be fine keeping them at home if you have adequate storage facility's, the cost of rented storage would eat into the appreciated value a bit, so would likely cancel out any additional value you would get if they where in Dunhill's.

There may not be a compartment available anyway! It would be worth checking them every now and again, you could take periodic photos with a date camera, this would add to there storage history, use that days newspaper also, this would help to prove many years careful storage.

I think it would be very hard to let them go after 15-20 years! best to keep two boxes you could sell one when the market conditions seem good, and keep one in case the value keeps going up, or smoke it your self, could also then sell a single or two.

Judging when and if to sell is perhaps the hardest part! also tastes change a bit, so it would be best to have a wide range of sizes and marques....

You need to look at the comparable gain in standard smokes and RE's and LE's! two boxes of 25 good regular production smokes my be worth more than a box of 10 LE's, especially if you break a box, or if the cigar is out of production....or it may be easier to sell on, a bit of research and some educated guesstermation!....

Some of those are definitely going to appreciate I think!

My guess would be that the RE and LE's from round about now will be at a premium in about 10 years (especially the Monte '08's methinks!), I'm no expert though!

I'm sure that the Cohibas will already show you a profit; maybe another 5 years will see them realise their full potential (again, I'm guessing....)

A very fine list of sticks there. That would be quite an investment.
