    Hi,

I've not smoked many maduro cigars, as it happens...mostly my smokes have been colorado-type wrapped - or at least towards that end of the wrapper spectrum.

Anyone a big fan? Do you prefer them to other wrappers, or what are your thoughts generally on them?

    Just curious.

    Pick me! Pick me!

I favo(u)r maduros. My taste runs to full-bodied, rich cigars and I find that the maduro wrapper lends a robust finish to a smoke.

Thanks for the responses guys...tell me, do you find them significantly sweeter than other cigars?

I've read this in publications, but not found it that discernible in my very limited experience of them...

Rokkitsci, you appear to be an American who knows how to spell properly. You are a rare and delicate creature indeed. Keep up the good work

As far as maduros go. I'm not particularly sold on them.

From my perspective: It's not that they make a cigar 'sweeter' in a traditional way. That is just how some people describe the particular taste of a maduro wrapped cigar. To be honest I think Rokkitsci's description that it makes cigars more 'robust' is probably closer (and certainly less misleading). I tend to associate dark coffee and dark chocolate flavours with maduro wrappers and an increased intensity of smoke that can be tasted in the mouth, rather than in the nose.

Try one of the Cohiba Maduro 5 range. They're interesting cigars, and certainly nothing like any other cuban. My own feeling is that the cubans have not quite got their maduro process down perfectly, and that cigars released this year and next year should be a little better consistency-wise than the original 2007 release. For certain though they need a helluva lot of ageing time before they release their true potential.

An interesting side-note is that a well-known and respected cigar retailer did an experiment a few months back in which he took a Cohiba Maduro Genios and a Siglo VI and had a roller take the wrappers off and re-roll them with each other's. After smoking them his estimation was that the two cigars were exactly the same blend, and it was only the wrapper that made them taste so completely different.

He did what??!! And the cigar gods didn't strike him down??

Makes me realise how hard up I am... I find it hard to get my head around that. I'm still busy worshipping the Siglo VI I won in the raffle

Interesting though...sounds like the better maduros at present might be NCs then...my last order from Monte had a Dominico maduro in it, and I'm looking forward to trying it.

              Best,

It was indeed an interesting conclusion. He is a guy whose own business sells I imagine thousands of cigars per month. Part of his job is to smoke them and review them for his customers (and anyone else who is interested).

As far as NC maduros go, they are undoubtedly more consistent than the Cohibas. But to my taste they seem to suffer more than natural wrapper NCs with the peculiar metallic taste I associate with most Non-cubans. Some people love them though, to each his own. Enjoy em, and let us know what you think.

                    Pick me too lol

Yep, I'm a fan of maduro wrapped cigars, it was the Phillies "Titan Black" that got me started on maduro wrapped sticks

In saying that, I'm going to try and have a good selection of cigars with various different wrappers, but Maduro wrapped cigars are definitely my favourite

                      Cohibs,

Ever have a Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra? Those smokes are so full flavored that you literally taste it for days after you smoke it. I'll send one out to ya if you haven't had one before.
Business in the front. Party in the back.

Another maduro fan here. Before I fell in love with Rocky Patel, my favourite cigar was a CAO Maduro Toro.

I'm a fan of medium cigars, though I think most would associate the darker wrapper with a stronger stick.
