  • Firewall/Virus Protection

Have been thinking about changing my firewall and virus protection of late. Would be interested to know what anybody else uses on their systems at home for protection.

Used to use ZoneAlarm but it had trouble running well on XPsp2 so ditched that for something else.

Am running with Symantec Antivirus and will probably stick with that, but as I said am thinking of changing the firewall from Comodo. Just don't think it is that user friendly or good enough.

I use AVG Free. Does the job, lightweight, free. As far as firewall's are concerned, I've never bothered since being behind a router instead of just a standard modem. Originally I used Zonealarm, many years back.

I don't use a firewall either for the same reason. When I used to run Windows I used AVG Free, though I've recently put avast! on other family computers.

PCTools Firewall will do the job.

I have McAfee because it came with my lap top but my computer man says that it's incredibly heavy on processor time and that as soon as the licence runs out I should dump it.

Can't remember what he suggested he would replace it with though, sorry!

I use AVG free and plain old Windows firewall whic has never given me any hassle (that I know of). Is there a reason you lot are using something other than the Windows one?

Senor Serious, would you mind explaining to us tech challenged why you don't need a firewall because you are hiding behind a router?

For example, I use an "air card." Does that provide the same benefits as a router?

              Muchas Gracias, chico!

Some routers come with a built in firewall I understand.

I have always run my pc's with both firewalls and virus protection as standard. It may be me being over protective but I see no harm in it at all.

Decided to go with Symantex AntiVirus and probably AVG pro or Kapersky for the firewall once I get round to deciding.

some isp provide both free as part of your package. Iknow with BT you get McCafee free. I fyou don't , micro mart pc builder mag once ran a test over various anti-virus / frewall packages and kaspersky was rated the best. Personally i used bullguard gamers edition security suite.

I use Kaspersky and like it, not doing much on line gaming lately so i don't knock if its firewall affects it.

avast! is what I use now. Used to use AVG for a very long time and thought I'd give this a try. No problems so far. UI is not as good as AVG but meh how often do you spend looking at your antivirus really?

                          Re: Firewall/Virus Protection

For Windows systems I'd recommend using Eset NOD32 but it isn't free. I've found it to offer good protection without impacting the performance too much.
