  • Bye bye Dominican Cohibas?

I was just reading of the latest ruling on the Cohiba brand on the Habanos website.

Given that General Tobacco will appeal, it is not over yet, but the chances of seeing the disappearance of Dominican Cohibas seem pretty high.

Cannot help wondering if this connects in some way to the discussion about deleting 8 Cuban brands Trevor mentioned here. Big changes coming?

Are the Dominican Cohibas worth keeping? I've always fancied trying one but never got round to it. I've heard some people say there not as good as they were.
Surely if that ruling applies to them could that happen for a lot of other brands?

I brought a couple back from the states and liked them. Pretty spicy from what I remember

I suspect you are right wrt the 8 brands. I'd love to know which ones they are. Probably not too difficult to guess most of them.

Can they not just rename the Dominican ones though? Dominicahibas or something? I realise that's not the point.

The Dominican Cohibas will probably be re-released under another brand name. I wouldn't panic about the recipe being gone forever.

            Dom Cohiba!

I have tried them a couple of times while in the US, and as larry says they are not going to be any great loss.

The best thing about them was their bands TBH.

Not many, if any, others would be in the same boat. The contention with Cohiba was that it was a brand which was created post-revolution. The others which are replicated were owned by families/businesses pre-revolution and decided to take their brand name with them. In those situations it would be difficult to rule against the family which owned the name (I'm not sure communist revolution is an accepted method of inheriting trademarks, other than in communist countries that is...)

Some interesting thoughts on Cuban v NC brand name issues here.
