  • Treated myself...

Well, wandering around Cheltenham today, working out how to splash my Christmas cash, I pop into a very nice wine and spirits shop. I ask if they have any of the Macallan 10yo Sherry Oak - my introduction to single malt Scotch, and still my favourite. Failing that, any other Macallans (was happy to spend a little extra as it was a Christmas buy).

Unfortunately, they had a rush on the Macallan just before Christmas, and the delivery which would restock all the Macallan lines had not yet arrived. Oh well... an opportunity to try a new distillery perhaps? I ask for a recommendation, with no specific requirements for style or region. The shop-keeper has a little think then pulls one out of his hat (not literally...) He grabs a little 20cl bottle - a D.Laing Old Malt Cask offering - an 11 year old Macallan (we got there in the end), which has been selected from a single cask for, according to the label, "A Fine Cigar's Pleasure".

At ?18 it wasn't particularly cheap per cl, however, it will be touched rarely, and saved for special occassions. I've tried to find it online, but can only see it on the Laing website, so I think I've got a nice, rare offering.

The first sip will be New Year, so I'll be able to report back on it then.

          Wo, that sounds nice.

I decanted a bottle of 1984 port which we didn't quite manage to finish.

I look forward to hearing how your whisky goes, the Port is quite superb.

I managed to source a bottle of this and a similar Mortlach offering a couple of months ago Simon. Not tried it yet, but it should be a winner.

I don't like the sound of that. Well, I like that it sounds awesome, I don't like that I might drink it all within a week...

                  whisky77 - we'll have to compare notes.

We had a 1987 last year. It was fabulous. Very little in life is as nice as a really good port.
