  • Holiday purchases in Zante

I am going back to Zante this coming July, back to where I started my cigar smoking last year (Oh! happy memories). Whereas last year I was happy smoking Guantanamera Cristals, Villiger Premium No7 and Henri Winterman Half Coronas, I now appreciate a quality handmade puro. I have tried the petit corona or mareva size in most Cuban brands but mostly stuck to cheaper NC brands and smaller ring gauges such as Carlos Torano dominicos, Charatan and Chinchalero.

In preparation for this years visit to the island I have contacted Habanos SA for an authorised retailer in Zante, as I plan to stock up whilst there, my understanding being that there are no limits to the amount of tobacco you can bring back to the UK if you purchase it in the country (tax paid) rather than at the duty free at the airport.

I am hoping to purchase 5 or 6 boxes while I am there (to bring back) plus a selection of singles I will work my way through while on holiday and bring back the rest. My problem is storage of the boxes once purchased and getting them back to the UK. I aim to make my purchases at the start of the holiday so need to store them for the two weeks.

I have thought that maybe I could purchase a tupperdore whilst there and take sufficient beads and distilled water for humidification, although this is a bit bulky in a hotel room. My other thought was to wrap the boxes individually with clingfilm thus sealing them and slowing the loss of moisture. Third thought was to take some large ziplock plastic food storage bags and some small humidification bead tubes or obtain some Boveda pouches and seal each box of cigars. Last thought was to only buy boxes of tubed cigars which should last longer without humidification.

Has anyone experienced the same problem or has anyone got any thoughts on which would be the preferred option.

Also has anyone ever visited the shop I intend to visit called Teboneras Nikolaos at 5 El. Venizelou Street, Zante Town.

    Cheers
    Andy

First off, where the bloody hell is "Zante?" Is this where your imaginary friend comes from? Why don't you go some place normal people go, like Disney World or Turkmenistan?

Secundumus, I have a marvelous solution to your problem: We fellow UKCF BOTL's and SOTL's shall meet you in Zanadu (or whatever the hell it's called) and help you smoke up ALL of your purchases, thus relieving you of the anxiety of worrying about proper humidification and all that rot. Ain't we some wunnerful peoples?

When I purchase boxes 5ers and I'm not going to be home for awhile (weeks at end)
I put my stogies in the dresser draw at my hotel with towels layed over them. If you like add a sponge with distilled water on a plastic plate as you humidifying device. And your good to go.
Do any of us think that when there shipped to our B&M that the suppliers go through all the work of humidity and temp?
When you are heading back home simply Put the cigars in a Zip lock freezer bag and pack as you would for the trip home. Your babies will be fine.

If Zante is NOT in the EEU or affiliated to the EEU and im not sure it is, you will be limited to 50 cigars per person. Anymore has to be declared at customs and duty into the UK paid.. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriv...ivingnoneu.htm I believe Greece is part of the EU.

If your going to the EEU i.e France, Germany, Belgium etc then this applies http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsP...CE_PROD_010221

Read first before you bring things from Zante

I had to Google it. Zante, also called Zakynthos is in Saggy's territory .... so, if anyone knows it will be him.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Good point and I had thought about that, but I only want to make one trip across the island to Zante town if possible. I have a fair idea what I want before I go. Much will depend on the stock they have. Problem being if I buy something as a single to smoke while I am there and not a box and it turns out I love it I will have to make a second trip. Maybe best to just stick to the wishlist.

                    Thanks guys for the advice.

Lee dub, I was thinking of tupperware, but a cooler box sounds like a much better idea.

George, thanks for the offer, but I will decline on this occassion.

Mike, yes the ziplock bags are what I was considering using to transport them, and if I could use them to store 6 boxes for the duration of the holiday that may be the solution, but I do like the cooler box idea.

Eggopp, yes Greece is in the EU so I think I am ok. I had read that if you bring back more than 200 cigars they might question whether they are for personal consumption, but I don't plan on bringing back more than 8 boxes.

Boveda water pillows have always been useful to me when stocking up in the states

Well, i would have to mark my territory.... saggel is from thereabouts, but I am from the island! . Zakynthos (or zante as it is known around here) is one of the 7 islands of the ionian sea on the west side of Greece, 3 islands below Corfu. Contrary to popular belief, Zakynthos does not have 12 months of summer, but 4 proper seasons.

Andy, I haven't been to the shop you mention, it must be relatively new... Please let me know how it is as I will be heading over around July/August. There is another one in St Marco's Square in town. They used to have a large glass humidor with some decent aged stock. Last time I was there, it was replaced by a small cabinet with the usual RyJ & Monte Tubos, Monte 2 & 4 etc etc, not more than 10 different types of cigars. Prices are relatively good but be careful of the condition of the cigars you will buy... Sometimes in supermarkets the cigars are very dry.

I would normally bring cigars with me, in case I can't find any decent stock. I would suggest ziplog bags with a small humidifier, but make sure the ziplog bags don't have the plasticy smell as they will ruin your smokes. Make sure you keep your cigars in the coolest spot of your room but not under the aircondition.

If you need advice or where to go or what to do drop me a PM. This should bring you back some memories...

You'll be fine with just ziploc bags for that short of a duration.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I was favouring the cooler box but i will have to get zip lock bags to transport them home anyway so why spend money when the zip lock bags with some humidification will do the job. I can store them on the floor under the bed which will be the coolest place. Also taking the bags with me i know i have things sorted rather than trying to find a large enough cooler box whilst i am there.

Yiorgos, that picture does indeed bring back good memories. I too hung off the edge of that cliff to take a picture of the shipwreck, when we did the blue caves trip. We are going early july so will let you know what the shop is like and thank you for your offer I will PM you closer to the time for some local knowledge. Cheers Andy
