  • Por Larra?aga Montecarlo

I was very excited to try this smoke out as I have heard alot of good things about Larra?aga. I was also very interested in liking this cigar as my budget is rather (very!) tight at the moment and the price on this cigar is very reasonable. In France I paid 3 Euros and change for the Montecarlo. I would have preferred to try the Petit Corona, but this is the only format my tobacconist had in the PL range. Had the camera handy for this one...

    length: 159mm
    gauge: 33
age: Based on the band this cigar was definitely produced in 2005 or earlier but after 2002 as it is hand-rolled. Anyways this thing had some age on it.

Looks: I really love the PL band, and although the cigar was a tad bumpy, overall I loved the looks.. alright mostly because of the band
    4/5

Construction: Wow did the ash hold on this baby ! I am used to the ash falling off pretty fast on thinner gauge cigars, not the case here. The draw was a bit tight but it was quite smokeable and i think the draw kinda goes with the territory on such a thin gauge cigar. I think I met my personal limit in terms of gauge and probably will not go below a 38 lancero/laguito gauge from now on.

Burn was very even. It went out twice, again I believe due to gauge. The smoke lasted much longer then I expected, took me 70 mons to smoke (as opposed to a Robusto which takes me 60-65 mins).
    4/5

Flavour: Bit of spice and Cuban twang at the start, some mild sweetness came in about a half inch in. Other reviewers have named it caramel... i'll go for that. halfway through i also got roasted coffee beans and a bit of nutiness.

This was not a super complex smoke, but I really enjoyed what i got and the light/medium body fit my profile perfectly.
    4/5

    Overall:
This was a very enjoyable and relaxed/meditative smoke for me with a simple yet great flavour profile. My only regret is the format... I just need to get my hands on a PC !
    4/5

Nice review Daize - covered all the aspects I'd be thinking about if I was eyeing one of these up in the store.

If you don't mind me saying, but I can tell that this review was written by someone in France due to the table-cover...

PS. A quick bit of translation for everyone, to save you looking it up, length is about 6 1/4 inches...

PPS. Being rather needy and pathetic as I am, is there any chance of the pics being reduced in size slightly? Pretty please...

Thanks. I think if you click on the edit button, you should be able to resize the pics by cicking and dragging from the corners.

Nice review. These are a bit of a hidden gem as the Larra?aga line as a whole is under the radar and the PCs tend to outshine the Montecarlos.

I love both the PC and the MC when I want a mild but flavourful cigar. I find them to have a caramel, creamy flavour; more caramel in the PC and more cream in the MC.

I've also noticed, that while I have not bought a great deal of cigars in France, they have all been overhumidified and required a bit of time lest the draw is too tight. Anecdotal evidence so take it for what it's worth.
            What would Lemmy do?

The Montecarlo is one of the best quality/price ratio of all cubans… (€3.20 in France)

Thanks for the review! I've been eyeing these up myself because of the price and I do like the PL character. Liking the photos too, even if they are rather large on my small screen.

This is definitely the case in my experience as well. The guy I buy at has the humidor at 75, the other smaller shop in Marseille is even worse. Dunno whats up with that in France. I try to keep a cigar I buy at the shop for a few weeks before smoking it.

Thanks for the compare and contrast with the PC...looks like that is what I will want a box of once I get my finances in better order. Maybe I'll manage a few singles until then

I believe underrated too is the PL Panatelas. It's quite a cheap smoke but dosen't lack for PL taste and character.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Another Por Larranaga fan here. and as it happens have box of Montecarlo on its way to me as I type! Agree PL's tend to slip under the radar of many, but I don't know why.

Great review, had some Valiosos RE Swiss recently from a spilt. think the whole range has a lovely creamy, toffee profile.

                            PL

I was given the PLPC from one of the BOTL and I found them to be a nice little smoke. I have also tried the RE Pyramid, which again was a quality smoke.
