  • Cigars in Space??

Not sure if I should post this in the Off topic area, or here...

A former member of my sister F-15C squadron (493d Grim Reapers) here at RAF Lakenheath is orbit bound tomorrow aboard the space shuttle. Col James Dutton is the pilot going into orbit for his first time since selection as an astronaut in May 04. He like most of us is also a cigar fan, but somthing tells me he will not be lighting up in orbit.
    God Speed Col D!

    DB Out!

Amazing ..... you can bolt a fella to umpteen tones of rocket fuel, blast him off to somewhere where everything outside is going to kill you ..... yet he mustn't smoke 'cos it might tickle a nose an' upset someone!

Brave bloke. Deserves a shedload of puro's when he gets back.
If you want to, you can.

yes, not like he creep of into the toilet, wind the window down and sneak one off.

Wonder how the smoke would react in a zero g environment?

Might form a big, smokey bubble .... then the entire crew can take a toke!

                  LOL!

You would think that mission control might let them sneak a few sticks on board for the last shuttle flight later this year!

Jim "Mash" Dutton is back on earth and stopped by the squadron for a visit...Unfortunatly we didn't have time for a cigar.

With my submariner hat on there should be no reason why you can't smoke in space. Lots of space atmosphere control actually evolved from submarines, logical when you think about it, big metal cans that create their atmosphere artificially. Main reasons why the techies wont like it is because the smoke particles clog up the filters faster (same reason why you shouldn't use electric razors etc) but smoking by the main atmosphere intake before the filters are due to be changed and disabling the automatic fire sensors but manually monitoring them is very doable. I bet, purely for scientific reasons, smoking a fine cigar has been carried out to perform atmosphere flow tests lol but for PR reasons the evil herf in space hasn't been released lol. The probably have something similar to a smokey match to detect air leaks, light it up and visually see where the air is being sucked to .

"time for another atmosphere smoke test"
"coolio, i'll just grab my cigar caddy and meet you in the airlock in 5 mins "
