  • Vino and a Stogie

Right so, no idea if this has been covered in any detail in the past, but on Sunday I spent my afternoon at a wine tasting near Oxford and we spent quite a bit of the time discussing various wine pairings. Naturally most of these discussions revolved around pairing wines with foods, but then I got to thinking: what is the perfect wine to go with that after-dinner stogie?

When we think about pairing wines with food, it's as often as subjective as it is scientific. There are some fairly obvious pairings that go quite wonderfully together (think a nice new world Chardonnay or a Sancerre to go with that stuffed mushroom to start). Yet equally, there are certain pairings that we are usually best to avoid - Pinot Noir and smoked salmon is really quite foul I can assure you. Beyond that, a lot of it comes down to individual tastes and what works wonderfully for some doesn't work quite so well for others. Indeed having these kinds of debates is, after all, half the fun! Unsurprisingly, then, this is likely the case with cigars too!

So pray tell, what kinds of wines have you paired with your favourite stogie over the years? Perhaps a nice full-bodied Rioja to compete with the intense, spicy notes of a Bolivar RC? Or a fruity NW Sauvignon to calmly rest above the relatively mellow yet fruity tones of that trusty Epicure No. 2?

Last night I paired this 2006 Shiraz from Mclaren Vale with a Monte 4. Sad to report, the Monte 4 was, to quote the chaps over at Friends of Habanos, 'ho-hum' to the core. The shiraz on the other hand, was bloody excellent! And while it sat well with the Monte, I can imagine it pairing better with something like a Dip 4 (to stay within the realm of Petit Coronas). Pepper fest, anybody?!

I find that fruit, body and sweetness work well so tend to move towards new world Shiraz and Tempranillo's to pair with a nice stogie. I certainly wouldn't go for a fine Burgundy as I think it would be waisted. Still a nice Y'quem should go down a treat, but seriously desert wine matches up very well.

I currently have a hankering for Pimm's with a good smoke, in my mind this will be a very good pairing.

Desert wine sounds good. I'll have to give that a try! Good timing as I picked up a nice bottle after the tasting on Sunday

            my favourite pairings are:
australia's tortoiseshell bay shiraz and a partagas d4 or p2.........
chile's frontera caberet sauvignon and bolivar royal corona
australia's mcguigan's black label shiraz monte PE or RYJ short churchill
australia's bend in the river merlot and h upmann magnum 46 or 50

most other cigars i smoke with an irish malt, cognac, armagnac, havana club rum or whatever else takes my fancy!!!

these are my go to, cheap n' cheerful wines that work for me!!!

            all the best,

            alex

              Now you're talking.
I confess to having a terrible 'sweet tooth'.

              Typical restaurant conversation.
              "Anyone ordering desert?"
"Of course I'm ordering desert. Are you mad? - Now, where's the wine list?"

This sad affliction, has resulted in me amassing quite a collection of desert wines over the years (all of the above, particularly the Tokaji (in a range of 'vintages' and 'Puttonyos'), and my favourite, 'Ice wines' from around the world. Trouble is, I'm the only bugger I know who likes 'em.

Maybe we should organise a 'themed' HERF.
I'd be happy to bring along a selection of the above (and some choice accompanying 'stogies') and we could wash the lot down with a nice 'creme brulee' or some such confection. Mmnn, sweet-o-licious.
              Anybody up for it?

Sounds good to me...a Dessert herf

Also like Monbazillac and a nice Muscat as well and even found a red dessert wine from Greece sold through Asda called Mavrodaphne, really good avlue at less than a fiver a bottle. I even found a Plum Sake at a Truro wine shop last year and that was an amazing drink but they have not had any more in stock for a while
