Tupperware Humidor

Hey All,

As threatened in my first post I thought I'd just ask a quick question about storing cigars.

I'm planning on buying a small selection of different cigars to try out, maybe 5 or 10 initially and want to make sure I keep them in good condition over a period of a couple of months or so. As a complete beginner I don't want to shell out too much on a fancy humidor which I might end up not using.

After doing a bit of reading I reckon my best bet would be to get a simple tupperware box into which I put a Puck humidification thingy. I then put my cigars into an old cigar box, which also goes in the plastic box. Then seal the thing up and open for a few minutes every week to get some fresh air in. Pretty simple; does that sound okay?

Also, any suggestions for quality cigars for a beginner would be welcome...

That humidor will work fine. Just make sure the tupperware is neutral (not teated or cooked in with curry or smelly in any way). I use large cool boxes which I line with spanish cedar...they work brilliantly. I have one nice desk top humidor which holds about 50 cigars so I can grab something and the rest are stored in the cool boxes.

Seeing as you started off with a D4 it might be worth trying a couple of other Cuban Robustos for comparison. The Cohiba is good (although I think they're more overpriced than most cigars). The Ramon Allones Specially Selected is brilliant. The Bolivar Royal Corona. Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill. Montcristo Petit Edmundo. are all good cigars. Its worth trying some Coronas too... and if you want something bigger the Montecristo No2 and Partagas Series P No2 are good piramides and the Romeo y Julieta Churchill and H Upmann Sir Winston are great Julietas.

However you'll find your own tastes.... but the D4 bodes well for relatively punchy cigars.

The other guys will have some great ideas... and certainly better ideas of the non cuban stuff than me.

I'd echo Drew on Cohiba Robustos (silly price), Ramon Allones Specially Selected, Bolivar Robustos, Montecristo Edmundo and would add Punch Punch... and more Partagas Serie D4, of course!

My only advice is that you use this temporarily. Too long in tupperware runs the threat of over humidifying. Humidors allow some small amount of airflow and tupperware does not. Also, rather than a puck humidifier, you would be better off using an inexpensive drymistat tube. Good luck!

Larry ? yea, this is a temporary solution. If I get into the whole cigar thing regularly then I?ll look to get a proper wooden humidor ? a good birthday present methinks. Also, I looked for those Drymistat tubes but I?m not sure they?re available in the UK. The Puck is supposed to absorb excess moisture as well as humidifying so that?s why I thought it would work well with the Tupperware.

Drew ? I?m with you on the idea of trying some more Robustos. Not only are they very cool looking but it will give me a chance to compare different brands more fairly.

I think I?ll also invest in some more beginner friendly stuff. I?ve seen the following mentioned which I presume are smaller and/or milder:

Por Larranaga Petit Corona
Rafael Gonzales Pantelas Extra
El Ray Del Mundo Choix Supreme
Hoyo de Monteray Epicure 1 and 2

Smaller cigars aren't necessarily better for beginners. The cigar is its own filter, so something like a petite corona might get too strong too quick. You might consider starting with a corona or robusto. You don't need to smoke the whole thing. It'll be for only the first few cigars, after which you'll probably have no problem with a whole cigar if you find that you like them. Of course, it depends on your palate.

Okay then I'll go with the suggestion of more Robustos in some brands that I haven't tried, plus a few "random" selections.

It seems that most people on here use Monte, right? I've read nothing but good stuff so I will have to get onto him in the next week or two!

I've also thought about building one of these temporary Humidors but where on earth can I get one of those Puck or Drymistat whatsits?

I can't seem to find a UK supplier.

Linfield... if you're feeling blue peter about the whole affair you can try a small tupperware box with holes drilled in the lid and a good lump of Oasis (the green flower arranging stuff, not the over rated gang of Manc retards you understand) inside!

In my cool box humidor I have two tupperware boxes like this, one containing distilled water and one containing propylene glycol. I have a digi-hydrometer in there and it is really stable.

Just wee a thing about blue peter humidors!. I`m looking at building a couple, one normal size about 50 to 75 cigars and another about 300 ish i`ll post some pictures up so you can see how they look!. Other than importing from abroad i cant see any reasonably priced humidors that look amazing.

Order it from the chemists. Its about ?10 for 5 litres, but its 4 years since i bought any.... i still have more than half the bottle left.

Well, I've got my Puck humidifier now and a bottle of de-ionised water - the Puck came from C Gars Ltd on the web for around ?15 inc p&p and the water for about 60p from Tescos. Apparently it'll do a container up to about 12L in volume and up to 100 cigars, which is well more than what I'll need for the near future.

Eagerly awaiting my cigars to put in it now...
