View Full Version : Tatuaje Miami Taino (double corona)

This afternoon, I had the pleasure of smoking a cigar that was new to me. The cigar was a Tatuaje Miami Taino. After reading Mr. T's thread about his experience with a Tatuaje cigar he recently had, it made me want to try one! The funny thing was, I got one in the mail the next day as a hitchhiker from a purchase that I made from a fella on a different forum.

The cigar is a double corona. It had a very dark wrapper. It was rolled in the USA.....Miami Florida to be exact. A city that I have always associated with fine cigars. As a matter of fact, I smoked the best cigar ever in Miami. Also plenty of great Cuban food there....talk to Big J about that one!

Although I don't really have anything written down such as a score for the cigar, I will tell you what I can remember about it. Besides, I was driving while I smoked it.

The cigar before lighting was an absolute beauty to look at. Very nicely constructed and wreaked of fine tobacco. It had a slight shimmer to it from the oils on the dark wrapper. I usually give a cigar the sguish test....this one felt like it was packed exactly the same all the way from its head to its foot. I assumed it would have a perfect draw. My assumption was correct! It was perfect in that department.

I toasted the foot as I do with every cigar I smoke....and got er fired up. Took a few nice pulls and instantly could identify the tobacco was from Nicaragua. Back in the day I smoked lots of Padrons and can tell a cigar from this region any day of the week. But the smoke was nothing special. Just was an ordinary cigar for the first....2 inches.

At the point where the cigar came to robusto size is where the flavour kicked in. The power as well. I have noticed this with most double corona cigars especially the lusitania. They seem to start off as somewhat mild, then they reach that 2nd third and that's when they take off. Well, that is exactly what this did! It took off! It tasted to me like a Cuban cigar at this point. It had much of the flavour that one would expect in a cigar from Cuba. If it had not been for the first 2 inches I would have thought all day long it was Cuban.

In summary, I would say that the cigar had notes of leather and wood. Maybe it could be leatherwood! To me it was a cross between a lusitania and a Don Alejandro. That's exactly what I thought while smoking it. That is the best way I can describe it. I had it down to about 1 inch before I chucked it from the window. I will say one thing. And this is not easy! It was ever so slightly the best double corona I have ever had. Worth the $275.00 price tag? I don't feel any box of cigars is! But the price would not stop me from picking up 5 or 10! This Pete Johnson guy means business. He makes a damn good cigar. I want to try a robusto size and see what I think.

Just some info for you guys on Tatuajes: Pete Johnson owns the brand name, but the blend was designed by Jose Pepin Garcia, or Don Pepin Garcia. That is the guy who became the blending celebrity in the NC world for the last ten years or so. His blends include La Aroma De Cuba, San Cristobal (for Ashton), Tatuaje, 601, 5 Vegas Miami, and a host of other cigars. Look his name up and you might find a bunch of cigars worth trying. My favorite of his is the Cuban Classic Black Label.

I'm pretty sure these cigars are blended to Pete Johnsons likes. Wouldn't you think if someone owned something they would want it blended how they liked it? Regardless, the miami is a wonderful smoke. Even if the man on the moon blended them!

Pete Johnson was in a rock band working in a cigar shop when he decided he could make his own cigar and make more money. What he knows about blending cigars is no more than you or I. He admits that and brags that he knew the best blender in the business was Jose Garcia, so he shelled out a bunch of cash to have Garcia make a blend for him. That's not blending to your likes, that's just smart business. :eviltongue:

He might not be personally be developing the blend but I somewhat doubt he is letting some guy just blend whatever the hell he wants. What I'm saying is I'm sure they have to meet his approval before being boxed and sold! I don't think he would sell a product that didn't meet his expectations.

Believe me, Jose Garcia could have pissed in a jar and handed it to Pete Johnson and Pete Johnson would have slapped a label on it and sold it. I would bet a million to one that Pete Johnson took the first blend Garcia offered him and hasn't looked back. :car:

Hey guys. I just wanted to jump on and clear up a few things on the brand and the people behind it.....

The owner of the brand is me Pete Johnson and I have been in the cigar business for close to 18 years. I had not played in the music business for many years when I met Pepin. I first met Pepin Garcia 7 years ago when no one in the cigar industry knew who he was. He was a very talented cigar maker and was quick to come up with blends but it took him four blends before he actually made me something that I liked and it was from my direction. When I met him, he had only been in the USA for about a year and he was working for a small company as an event roller. A talent waiting to be discovered and flower.

When I first made this cigar, it was something for me to enjoy and the business side didn't come into play until about a year later when people started wanting it. I am very specific with Pepin when it comes to my taste in a cigar. We work closely together along with his son Jaime to find products that I like to smoke first....There have been many blends that Pepin and Jaime make for their other clients that I don't like at all but the ones I have liked have been far more.....Today after working with Pepin and Jaime for over 7 years, I am very well versed in tobacco. With great thanks to them of course but I can say with pride, that my newest creation El Triunfador and so far my best received product since the original brown label Miami Tatuaje, was a blend that I created by myself.....

I hope this clears up some questions and I am very happy to see that there is another forum out there.....

My hobby and passion turned into a business. This was never about making money but turned out that way......

Thanks for smoking.....

On another note, I'm looking forward to the football match on the 11th between the USA and UK. I sponsor a small football club in Los Angeles and plan on watching the match at my favorite pub (The King's Head) with some of my friends from both sides of the pond. Not sure who I am rooting for yet.
