I have been looking to rent a flat recently and it's been proving quite difficult to find one where the landlord doesn't mind smoking. I have found a few that are alright but there are many more that state no smoking. Anyone else found this problem recently? If you are renting a non smoking flat|house how easy is it to get away with smoking?

As you can imagine I don't want to have to go outside all the time particually as most flats where I'm looking don't seem to have a garden.

Any useful tips would be very useful guys

Just tell 'em you had a party the night before and that smokers were the least of your worries.

Seriously though, the last house I lived in was no pets, no smokers. We had an incontinent Westie and me, when I was on 20 a day. No grief. If going through an agency it's often something they put on the contract as standard. Just don't leave any burns and try and ventilate well and don't worry. I understand other people's views may differ greatly to mine though...

I believe it is all rooted to insurance. A flat ban on smoking will significantly reduce risks of damage to the property. Smoke away, but as dave stated, just be sensible (which you obviously are) in terms of ventilation and burn damage avoidance, and of course deniability (unless of course we're talking about a landlord that just lets himself in to your home whenever he feels like it.).

Cheers for the replys, seems its not as much problem as I thought and I can just smoke in there but didn't like feeling discriminated against as us smokers so often are

in a good dozen rooms in flat shares ive been looking at in london, all have strictly been none smoking. if cigarettes are out, cigars are completely out of the question... the smoke lingers so much more and is more obtrusive.

how about a UKCF commune? rent out some flats and have them as perpetual smoking dens!
