  • Back to the Future?

Cap's candy nostalgia thread got me thinking about the past a bit. Now, I'm no believer in the idea that things were somehow better in the past just because progress is really bunk, but I'm also no believer in the idea that just because things are new and desirable, they're better. So I was wondering what you miss about the way things were. In other words, what part of your past would you bring back if you could?

For me, two things consistently always spring to mind:

    1. Smoking in bars. I so miss that. Fine, smoke is bad for you, but it's a friggin bar, not a gym.

    2. Not being plugged in 24/7. I remember dial-up. I remember a world without email! Sure, I like my computer, my smart phone, my interwebs and all that. But I also get a bit annoyed at always being available. Sometimes I leave my phone at home (though not as often as I should) just so I can say to my annoyed friend or wife, "sorry, missed the call/text/email." Everything has become so instantaneous that I wonder whether we even have an idea as to whether or not it's a good thing.

Well i dont have email, nor the internet, nor a computer, nor a mobile phone, this is all a dream shall i wake up now?

I liked the fact that when i was in the army and you got called out someone came and banged on your door.

I miss my first car a Datsun 120Y, the days before Nissan became a giant and took over

I miss my first bike if you can call it that a Yamaha FS1E 49cc moped that looked like a bike, wasnt governed and restricted to 30mph and could do 65mph if i was laying over the tank on a straight road.

I miss my ex wife... haha that had you all going, naaaa she can stay history.

I believe the past always seems better than the future, mainly because we tend to focus on all things that were good back then (i recall there being a study of this some years back). In answer to your question though, yes, I agree with your latter answer in relation to the so-called "24-7 world connection". I miss the mystery of travel, exploration and self-discovery now defaced by the power of the World Wide Web, 24-hour HD television news, and mobile internet technology. The world just seems so small nowadays.

Too true--I mean, you can't even get lost anymore.

Have I mentioned Google Earth yet? I've already been all over the US, parts of Australia, Europe, Asia, and Galapagos this week alone!

I try to limit my Google Earth exposure as it can quite easily eat up gallons of my time.

But yes, I did try it a year or so back. Not bad at all!

I do believe this man is in need of some rather drenched lip exchange.
