  • York Herf - early September

    Well that's vague!

However there is a cigar retailer in York keen to organise something - at the moment he is looking for help in finding a venue but will take care of everything else, so any ideas gratefully received.

Could be an oliva / Nub event - but anything is possible.
I'm sure there are greater things in life than a fine cigar ........... but right now I can't think what they might be.

Yes - still a willingness to organise something. So if anyone in York knows somewhere cigar friendly (i.e. good outdoor heaters) please step forward.

I found myself in York for the first time ever on Tuesday & asked at the tourist information office if there was anywhere I could buy cigars. They pointed me towards The Evil Eye lounge on Stonegate:

            http://tinyurl.com/3yj4l2v

There's an off-licence shop at the front with quite a good selection of tubed cigars (I picked a Quintero Tubos - never seen them for sale in the UK before), a bar/restaurant in the middle & a fair-sized "beer" garden out the back.

Outside's a bit bohemian/student loungey (blue painted garden walls with old mirrors, mix of different junk tables & chairs) but has a big orange awning that I suspect could cover almost all the garden (not required to be open when I was there) with I think infra-red heaters. Appeared to have a decent range of food & bottled lagers from around the world, although I stuck to diet pepsi having had a bit of a blow out the previous evening & as the coffee machine was out of bounds due to that part of the floor being re-tiled.

I don't know how busy it gets in the evening, I suspect not too heaving for a 1/2 dozen or so mid-week herfers. There are 8 or so tables in the garden, just over half of which were taken by the time I left on a warm sunny mid-week lunch time.

I passed a very enjoyable 45-60 mins in the sun with the Quintero which suited the occasion perfectly.

Hmmmm.... Evil Eye I remember it well from my student days! Student night (Tuesday) it was always absolutely packed. When they extended their opening hours to 1am on a Fri/Sat night the campus newspaper I recall posted a headline which read something like 'Finally People Can Get Served at Evil Eye'

Best time in my experience... Saturday about 4-5pm. Lovely and quiet
Unless its rep has drastically changed I'd avoid it midweek evenings (I admit I left York 5 years ago now!)

Another great place in York for cigars is Choice Select on Coppergate.

Choice select is the only place to buy decent cgars in York.....usual offy selections in other places, i.e. oddbins etc, but choice has the "choice" and monthly offers.
Can't think of any decent sized "smoker" friendly places, awning/heater combo....The Ackhorne off Micklegate has smallish covered smoking area, Golden globe has a nice outside...all ale places rather than eat/posh places!
Evil Eye Lounge!? I'd never go in, looks like it would stink!
