  • Newbie cigar trip - Gibraltar V Spain - Fight!

Pal & I are discussing a pre Xmas cigar raid on either Gibraltar or Spain.

Gib seems to have the advantage on price, but limits on how many sticks we legally carry as it's non EU?

Spain is more expensive but within EU.

We've had lots of recommendations for shops to visit (Purely to have a look of course! Please don't crush my thread Mods!) in Gib, but advice on Spain seems a lot more muddy.

Any tips, advice, suggestions from your hardened cigar travelling veterans.

    Ta muchly

    Mornin'/Evenin' Dave (delete as appropriate).

How long are you thinking of going for? (and how many cigars are you planning to bring back?).

Reason I ask is, although Gib is a little more 'picturesque' than it used it be these days, Spain is (insert subjective opinion here) a better bet as far as quality of accommodation (and choice) is concerned. Plus, bars/nightlife/restaurants/and or/other.

If it were me (and it sometimes is), I'd opt for Spain and perhaps make a couple of trips into Gib for 'supplies'. Personal allowance from Gib into Spain equals 50 cigars per person per trip (wink, nudge etc).
From Spain to the UK , etc, etc.

Either way, have fun and enjoy!

          Why dont you do both?

Fly in to Malaga airport and get the train from outside the airport into the city for some cigar shopping.

Gib is a 2 hr coach ride from Malaga. your only allowed 25 cigars from gib to Spain per border cross (per day)...both of you could buy 25 cigars each and go back to Spain. If there was anything else you wanted to buy you can leave your cigars in your hotel and go back again. Technically you should go back the next day but no one checks.

Since you are flying to and from Spain you are allowed your full allowance of 50 cigars each to bring back.

As Spain is within the EU, can't you bring back as many as you like(within reason)?

Is it not? Gibraltans vote in the same European Parliament region as me. I wouldn't have thought they could do that if they were non-EU.

I do, however, stand to be corrected.

I don't anymore, a slightly closer look confirms that the British Treaty of Accession (to the EU) includes Gibraltar.

However, it's not part of the EU's customs union - so that's where the issues may start to crystalize with regards to bringing cigars back.

Unless the rules have changed since I managed an HMRC bonded warehouse in 2004/5 (and they may well have), the country in which you purchased them is the determining factor in how many cigars you can bring back. ie. even if you bring them from Gib into Spain, you can still only bring back to the UK, duty-free the number that you would have been allowed had you been bringing them back directly from Gib. Just something to check/watch out for.

Hi Dave, if you are planning a long weekend you would do well staying at The Rock hotel on Gib and visiting Stagnettos the best selection anywhere and usually aged. There are about 4 shops of Staggies on the high St i think No 46 is the main Casa, opposite a nice coffee shop surrounded by bars and restaurants in the square, and no need to get Euros.

????? They accept GB Pounds you mean?
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Hmmm, bit confused here, Gibraltar is part of Britain, so they accept the pound and I have would assumed you could bring back whatever the hell you want in whatever quantities you like, as long as the object in question is legal in Britain of course...

But! Then I found this -
"General - Import and Export of Goods
Gibraltar is not part of the EU Common Customs Territory.

The amount of goods (e.g. tobacco and alcohol) that you can take into and out of Gibraltar is more limited than for visits between the UK and other EU countries."

                          on - http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-...rope/gibraltar

All a bit weird if you ask me

Gibraltar is not part of the EU and is a duty free place so you are limited to the same allowances as you would if you travelled anywhere outside the EU...great value when you are there though

So if you are flying in/out of GIb.... is it 25 or 50 cigars each?
