  • Another country bans smoking

Off to Barbados in October and sad to find they now have a smoking ban similar to the one in the UK, and it is being introduced just 10 days before we get there

Barbados is outlawing smoking in public places from October 1.The ban, announced yesterday by Minister of Health Donville Inniss, comes with stiff fines for both smokers and businesses that don’t clamp down on people taking a puff.It covers rum-shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, other businesses, Government buildings and some places of “national significance” such as libraries […]

The smoke police appear to be casting their nets further afield

And they won't stop there either.
The nazis get a taste of power and point their nasty little digits at something else to spoil.
I swear to god they'll be banning beer in pubs if the little shitbags get their way.

Cuba did instal a ban a year or two ago but nobody enforces it in bars etc, just looking now for a list of countries that don't have a ban and I can then see where I can go on holidays

            Gibraltar is still good

Its sad to hear another country have a ban! From my own experience China is the most smoker friendly but they are even having a ban soon.

Bad luck Andy, at least the weather should be good enough to smoke outside any time you fancy. Have a great time

I reckon we should hurry up and all club together and buy a little island somewhere to ensure that there will always be somewhere to go to for a smoke.

The ban in Greece starts today:

Tobacco advertising prohibited and anti-smoking board games to be distributed to children to cut country's high smoking rates

Personally, I don't mind. Despite the feeling of exile you get as a smoker being forced outdoors, and the inconveniencesmokers face, let's face it, smoking indoors is a little inconsiderate, particularly as the majority of the population are non-smokers.

I am greek and I am hopeful that this time the ban will stay in Greece. They always left a small "window" in the law, this time it looks pretty strict.

But I kinda disagree with the total ban... I think there could be provision for places to have completely enclosed smoking areas, where no staff is allowed.

Actually, the EU law on smoking mainly is concerned about staff health. Many have 12 hour shifts, 5-6 days per week, the amount of smoke they inhale is ridiculous.

I have worked as waiter in my youth in Greece, and had a lung infection even though I was not a smoker...

Even in California, where the anti-smoking movement started, if you are an owned and don't employ staff, but work in the place yourself, you are allowed to get a smoking license. Most cigar stores and a few bars do that.

I'm often asked by the Missus, how do cigar clubs in London, like La Casa Del Habano, deal with the ban.

I understand the COS idea, and have done so at a couple of hotels in the UK and abroad, but haven't been to La Casa Del Habano, do you smoke indoors? How's that work?

                          Anyone been to the Casa?

Also upstairs in JJ Fox (I've never ventured upstairs, always a flying visit) how does that work, is it a sealed room?

                          So many questions......

After several minutes of indecision... standing in their 'walk-in' humidor... you purchase a cigar (or two)... run up the stairs as giddy as a schoolboy about to have a secret assignation behind the bike sheds (what's the American equivalent of that), and throw open the large windows to:
                            a) enable you to 'breathe'
                            b) enjoy the view of the peasants below
                            and
                            c) provide a means of safely throwing out any southern 'dandies' who may be hogging the seats.
(Unless 'you' are a southern dandy yourself, in which case you politely wait for someone to 'bugger off').

I hope this answers your question.

It does and I shall avail myself of the facilities on my next visit!
